He struck a conciliatory tone at a time when the U.S. administration and other U.S. tech executives have launched a full-frontal attack on some of the EU\u2019s tech rulebooks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe understand that European laws apply to our business practices in Europe, just as local laws apply to local practices in the United States,\u201d Smith said in a blog post, referring to European competition law and the EU\u2019s new digital competition rulebook, the <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/bills\/609150\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Markets Act. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Smith added that Microsoft wants to be a \u201cvoice of reason,\u201d promoting \u201cstable\u201d ties across the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft\u2019s pitch could be on a collision course with a growing movement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/push-for-eurostack-as-eu-us-tech-tensions-grow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pushing<\/a> for a European tech infrastructure, and growing <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/197879\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calls<\/a> by European governments to build a sovereign cloud.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Training AI models requires vast amounts of computer power and data storage capacity.
