{"id":624580,"date":"2025-12-10T16:48:32","date_gmt":"2025-12-10T16:48:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/624580\/"},"modified":"2025-12-10T16:48:32","modified_gmt":"2025-12-10T16:48:32","slug":"st-pauls-cathedral-to-get-biggest-public-space-in-city-of-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/624580\/","title":{"rendered":"St Paul\u2019s Cathedral to Get Biggest Public Space In City of London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0big makeover of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/attractions\/st-pauls-cathedral-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">St Paul\u2019s<\/a> Gyratory \u2013 that\u2019s the complex and quite frankly perilous one-way traffic system outside the cathedral \u2013 has been in the works since 2023.\u00a0In 2024 it was also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/news\/a-new-public-square-and-play-area-is-coming-to-st-pauls-052224\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced that a huge new public square and play area would be built<\/a> in front of the cathedral, called Greyfriars Square.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Work on the roads initially began in April 2025,\u00a0though there\u2019s\u00a0now a new update on the project. The final\u00a0designs for the new public square were officially approved in December 2025 (see pictures below). It\u2019s expected that Greyfriars Square could be complete by mid-2027.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The detailed designs for Greyfriars Square have now been given planning permission by the City of London Streets\u00a0and Walkways Sub-Committee, allowing works to begin on the final stages of the\u00a0transformation project.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"2c500b1a-24b6-267f-6f44-56ef67194255\" class=\"photo lazy inline\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"lazy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1765385305_106_image.webp.webp\" alt=\"Greyfriars Square \" data-caption=\"\" data-credit=\"Image: City of London Corporation\" data-width-class=\"\" data-image-id=\"106352890\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\nImage: City of London Corporation&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Once finished, the\u00a03,500-square-metre\u00a0square will be the City of London\u2019s\u00a0largest public open space. In the plans, almost 1,500 square metres of existing roads will be converted into new pavement. There will also be 800 new metres of east-west and north-south cycle lanes, plus new and improved crossings for pedestrians and cyclists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"cfb1894e-ceb6-66b7-b5b2-6040e289119e\" class=\"photo lazy inline\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"lazy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1765385309_595_image.webp.webp\" alt=\"Greyfriars Square \" data-caption=\"\" data-credit=\"Image: City of London Corportation\" data-width-class=\"\" data-image-id=\"106352895\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\nImage: City of London Corportation&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The three traffic lanes at the\u00a0south end of King Edward Street will be closed to traffic and converted into a new 3,500 square-metre pedestrianised public square, equivalent to the size of 12 tennis courts. The square will be filled with trees, flower beds, public seating and a children\u2019s play area.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"3e131b87-faec-a976-f26a-fa2391fedffe\" class=\"photo lazy inline\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"lazy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1765385312_588_image.webp.webp\" alt=\"St Paul's Gyratory\" data-caption=\"\" data-credit=\"Image: City of London Corporation\" data-width-class=\"\" data-image-id=\"106352892\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\nImage: City of London Corporation&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year,\u00a0chairman of the City of London Corporation Planning and Transport Committee Shravan Joshi said: \u2018The St Paul\u2019s Gyratory project will enhance all that the Square Mile offers, creating a welcoming walking route that connects the Tate Modern to the future London Museum.
