She then sketched out several possible fallbacks on dairy contracts \u2014 a politically charged issue for many countries \u2014 but without settling on a clear line the rest of the Parliament team could rally behind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then she introduced new terms out of nowhere,\u201d one Parliament official said, after Imart proposed adding \u201cliver\u201d and \u201cham\u201d to the list of protected meat names for the first time. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was very messy,\u201d another Parliament official said.<\/p>\n<p>EU countries, led in the talks by Denmark, said they simply had no mandate to move \u2014 not on the naming rules and not on dairy contracts. <\/p>\n<p>With neither side giving ground, the discussions ground to a halt. \u201cWe did not succeed in reaching an agreement,\u201d Danish Agriculture Minister Jacob Jensen said.<\/p>\n<p>Imart insisted that the gap could still be bridged. Dairy contracts and meat-related names \u201cstill call for further clarification,\u201d she said in a written statement, arguing that \u201ctangible progress\u201d had been made and that \u201cthe prospect of an agreement remains close,\u201d with negotiations due to resume under Cyprus in January.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/GettyImages-2246569413-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7640004\"  \/> \u201cWe did not succeed in reaching an agreement,\u201d Danish Agriculture Minister Jacob Jensen said. | Thierry Monasse\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Dutch Green lawmaker Anna Strolenberg, who was in the room, said she was relieved: \u201cIt\u2019s frustrating that we keep losing time on a veggie burger ban \u2014 but at least it wasn\u2019t traded for weaker contracts [for dairy farmers].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For now, that means veggie burgers, vegan nuggets and other alternative-protein products will keep their familiar names \u2014 at least until Cyprus picks up the file in the New Year and Brussels\u2019 oddest food fight resumes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Wednesday meeting quickly veered off course.
