Over the next century, Victoria and Albert\u2019s affinity for tartan precipitated what scholars refer to as a \u201cBalmorization\u201d of fashion and home design. Plaids and checks belonging to the Campbell, MacKenzie, and Douglass clans popped up in coats, gowns, and children\u2019s garments while tartan became a mainstay of British and American interiors. As twentieth century textile designers Anni Albers<\/a>, Mary Storr<\/a>, and Dan Cooper<\/a> sought to create affordable tartan fabrics and wallpaper, Dutch architect and Benedictine monk Hans van der Laan<\/a> elevated tartan as an exemplar of \u201cspatial superposition,\u201d as reflected in his design of the St. Benedictsburg Abbey at Vaals between 1968 and in 1986. In 1991, Ralph Lauren became the most famous name associated with tartan interiors when he launched his own line of tartan fabrics, china, mirrors, napkins rings, and mahogany furniture. For Lauren, \u201ctartan is not just a fabric,\u201d reported The New York Times of the new collection<\/a>. \u201cIt is a way of life.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the timelessness of tartan ensures that it will never go out of style, it\u2019s clear that it is resonating with people more than it has in years<\/a>. Following Dior\u2019s inventive line<\/a> of reinterpreted tartans, tweeds, and knits debuted at Scotland\u2019s Drummond Castle last June, Celine, Valentino, Ferragamo, Chloe, Loro Piana, and Bottega Veneta have all embraced tartan<\/a> as part of a broader \u201ccountryside style\u201d<\/a>\u2014an aesthetic that we are seeing be echoed by brands like Hill House Home<\/a> and Boden<\/a>, which just launched its playful \u201cTartan Time\u201d<\/a> collection this fall.<\/p>\n

At the same time, tartans, tweeds, and checks have started to permeate home design. \u201cThe inevitable crossover from fashion to interiors is not surprising,\u201d says interior designer Stephanie Hunt<\/a>, who encourages her clients to \u201cdress like you decorate, and vice versa.\u201d Out is the minimalist, modern farmhouse style, she says, and in is the layered, colorful, and print-heavy, making tartan a no-brainer.<\/p>\n

Of course, designers have always loved working with tartan, regardless of whether it is \u201cin\u201d or not. Many designers I spoke for this story say they appreciate the cloth\u2019s durability, especially for clients with pets or young families. \u201cBecause of the pattern and the repeat and the multiple colors, you\u2019re going to hide stains and wear and tear,\u201d explains designer Katie Davis<\/a> of Houston, Texas.<\/p>\n
