Danish intelligence services have accused the US of using its economic power to \u201cassert its will\u201d and threatening military force against its allies.<\/p>\n
The comments, made in its annual assessment released this week, mark the first time that the Danish Defence Intelligence Service (DDIS) has listed the US as a threat to the country. Denmark<\/a>, the report warns, is \u201cfacing more and more serious threats and security policy challenges than in many years\u201d.<\/p>\n The report said that the US is \u201cnow using its economic and technological strength as a means of power, including against allies and partners\u201d.<\/p>\n Competition between superpowers Russia, China and the US, it said, is \u201cincreasingly taking place in the Arctic\u201d which is growing in strategic importance amid increasing tensions between Russia and the west. This, it notes, poses a specific threat to Denmark, which used to rule Greenland<\/a> as a colony and continues to control its foreign and security policy.<\/p>\n \u201cThe increased great power competition in the Arctic<\/a> has significantly increased international attention to the region,\u201d it said. \u201cThis applies in particular to the United States\u2019 increasing interest in Greenland and its importance to US national security.\u201d<\/p>\n It adds: \u201cAt the same time, the attention increases the threat from espionage, including cyber espionage, and attempts to further influence all parts of the kingdom of Denmark.\u201d Greenland remains part of the Danish commonwealth or kingdom.<\/p>\n Last week, the new US National Security Strategy policy document, with an introduction signed by Trump, claimed that Europe faces \u201ccivilisational erasure\u201d within the next two decades as a result of migration <\/a>and EU integration, arguing that the US must \u201ccultivate resistance\u201d within the continent to \u201cEurope\u2019s current trajectory\u201d.<\/p>\n It came at a time of already heightened tension between the US and Denmark after Trump\u2019s repeated assertions over the past year that he wants to take control of Greenland.<\/p>\n Earlier this year, vice-president JD Vance visited US military base Pituffik and accused Denmark of having \u201cnot done a good job\u201d<\/a> in Greenland. In August, an alleged US influence campaign<\/a> in Greenland resulted in Denmark summoning<\/a> the US charge d\u2019affaires. In a damning symbol of the changed dynamic between Denmark and the US, traditionally its largest and most important ally, it was recently revealed that Copenhagen had established a \u201cnight watch\u201d<\/a> tasked with monitoring Trump\u2019s unpredictable words and actions while Denmark sleeps.<\/p>\n Despite the report\u2019s warnings, the head of the DDIS, Thomas Ahrenkiel, said that the US was still Denmark\u2019s closest ally.<\/p>\n \u201cThe United States has been and continues to be the guarantor of Europe\u2019s security through its involvement in the transatlantic alliance, its presence in Europe<\/a> and through the American nuclear umbrella,\u201d he told broadcaster DR.<\/p>\n \u201cThe United States is leveraging economic power, including threats of high tariffs, to assert its will, and the possibility of employing military force \u2013 even against allies \u2013 is no longer ruled out,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n It also warns of the \u201cuncertainty\u201d around the role of the US as a \u201cguarantor of European security\u201d which it said will increase Russia\u2019s \u201cwillingness to intensify its hybrid attacks against Nato\u201d.
