{"id":629225,"date":"2025-12-13T00:40:18","date_gmt":"2025-12-13T00:40:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/629225\/"},"modified":"2025-12-13T00:40:18","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T00:40:18","slug":"world-cup-winners-medal-sold-at-auction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/629225\/","title":{"rendered":"World Cup winner&#8217;s medal sold at auction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Former Springboks loose forward Adriaan Richter\u2019s 1995 Rugby World Cup winner\u2019s medal has been sold in a live auction in South Africa recently.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The gold medal, which is considered as a rare piece of South African sporting history, went under the hammer for ZAR R62,500 (c.GBP 2,770).<\/p>\n<p>The Old Johannesburg Warehouse Auctioneers initially listed the medal with a starting bid of R30,000 (c.GBP 1,333) and an estimated value of between R40,000 (c.GBP 1,778) and R100,000 (c.GBP 4,444).<\/p>\n<p>Medal presented by Nelson Mandela<\/p>\n<p>It was presented to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/tag\/Adriaan-Richter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richter<\/a> by South Africa\u2019s former president Nelson Mandela after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/team\/south-africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Springboks<\/a>, under the captaincy of Francois Pienaar, defeated their arch rivals the All Blacks 15-12 \u2013 after extra-time \u2013 in the final at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n<p>The medal is described on the Old Johannesburg Warehouse Auctioneers\u2019 website as a \u201cvery rare original Rugby World Cup 1995 winners\u2019 medal\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It is a large gold-gilded silver piece made from 999 purity silver, measuring 6.5cm in diameter.
