It was his most significant win in several seasons and appeared to set the tone for a strong winter campaign.

From career high to personal heartbreakOnly days after that success, however, Aerts and Tamara were confronted with a life changing loss. In an emotional message shared on Instagram, Aerts explained how their joy quickly turned to fear and sorrow. “How you made us so happy when you came into our lives,” he wrote. “You carried us on a little cloud to daddy’s beautiful victory at the European Championships, but five days later you gave us a terrible fright. You had implanted outside the womb, which meant mummy had to undergo emergency surgery and we lost you.”

The couple revealed that their baby, Billie, passed away on 14 November, five days after the European Championships. A baby onesie in the style of Aerts’ champion’s jersey had already been made, underlining just how close the family felt to welcoming a new life.

Despite the emotional weight of the loss, Aerts still lined up to race in Merksplas the following day, a decision that now casts his subsequent performances in a very different light. In the races that followed in Niel, Merksplas, Tabor and Flamanville, the European champion was unable to impose himself in the way many expected. Rather than a mystery of form or condition, those quieter results now sit alongside a far more human explanation.

“You are the smallest little star on daddy’s jersey, which will make him wear it with even more pride,” Aerts added in his message. “We love you, Billie. You will forever be in our hearts.”

Support beyond results and rankings

In the days since the announcement, messages of support have flowed in from across the cyclocross community. Riders, teams and fans alike have expressed their sympathy, reminding everyone that behind the race numbers and results are people navigating real lives and real loss.

For Aerts, the European champion’s jersey will now carry a meaning that extends well beyond sporting achievement. It stands not only as a symbol of competitive success, but also as a quiet tribute worn through one of the hardest moments a family can face.

As the season continues, results will come and go, but the response from the cyclocross world has made one thing clear. In moments like these, the sport is united not by competition, but by compassion.

Racing on home soil, the Belgian rider delivered a measured and intelligent performance, waiting for the decisive…

[4104
4230,184548,52826,79,187539,16,15
0":"post-629502","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-cycling","8":"tag-cycling","9":"tag-cyclocross","10":"tag-european-championships","11":"tag-sports","12":"tag-toon-aerts","13":"tag-uk","14":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
