{"id":630225,"date":"2025-12-13T13:29:52","date_gmt":"2025-12-13T13:29:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/630225\/"},"modified":"2025-12-13T13:29:52","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T13:29:52","slug":"spacex-alleges-a-chinese-deployed-satellite-risked-colliding-with-starlink","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/630225\/","title":{"rendered":"SpaceX Alleges a Chinese-Deployed Satellite Risked Colliding With Starlink"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A SpaceX executive says a satellite deployed from a Chinese rocket risked colliding with a Starlink satellite.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, company VP for Starlink engineering, Michael Nicolls, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/michaelnicollsx\/status\/1999630601046097947\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\">tweeted<\/a> about the incident and blamed a lack of coordination from the Chinese launch provider CAS Space.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen satellite operators do not share ephemeris for their satellites, dangerously close approaches can occur in space,\u201d he wrote, referring to the publication of predicted orbital positions for such satellites.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CAS Space <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cas-space.com\/news\/218\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> successfully launching nine satellites on Wednesday using its Kinetica-1\/Lijian-1 rocket. The payload included six Chinese satellites, two other jointly-developed satellites for clients from the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/a\/202512\/11\/WS693a1dbea310d6866eb2e090.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noopener\">along<\/a> with a student-built satellite from Nepal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But it looks like one of the satellites veered relatively close to a Starlink sat that\u2019s been in service for over two years. \u201cAs far as we know, no coordination or deconfliction with existing satellites operating in space was performed, resulting in a 200 meter (656 feet) close approach between one of the deployed satellites and <a href=\"https:\/\/in-the-sky.org\/spacecraft.php?id=56120\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noopener\">STARLINK-6079<\/a> (56120) at 560 km altitude,\u201d Nicolls wrote.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p>\n    <a class=\"text-gray-600\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/michaelnicollsx\/status\/1999630601046097947\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n        This Tweet is currently unavailable. Keep an eye on your inbox!<\/p>\n<p>For now, CAS Space told PCMag it\u2019s in contact with Nicolls to learn more about the \u201calleged incident.\u201d However, the company noted: \u201cWe value the responsible use and sharing of space as the utmost priority. Situations like these are the reason why nations should work together in space, build their common understanding instead of segregating emerging nations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it doesn\u2019t appear CAS has many details about what exactly occurred. The company said: &#8220;As a launch service provider, our responsibility ends once the satellites are deployed, meaning we do not have control over the satellites&#8217; maneuvers. Nonetheless, it is everyone&#8217;s common interest to avoid collision, so CAS Space will provide help however we can.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The company added: \u201cOur first priority is to identify the exact timeline of the incident. Which of the nine satellites were involved? Did the incident happen during satellite deployment or during the orbit maneuver of one of the satellites? Once we have a clearer picture, we will be in a better position to provide assistance to Starlink.\u201d the Chinese launch provider said.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>        Recommended by Our Editors<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the company asserted that \u201cAll CAS Space launches undergo a mandatory process to align our deployment sequence with ground-based space awareness systems to avoid any potential collision with known satellites\/debris. Kinetica-1 Y11 launched at 04:03:45 UTC exactly to an SSO at 550 km with LTDN at 10:30. Satellite separation was nominal. No collision risks were reported for the deployment process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the first time Chinese space activities have raised alarm bells in the US over potential collision risks. Last year, a different rocket carrying satellites for a Chinese version of Starlink <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/chinas-effort-to-launch-starlink-rival-accidentally-creates-orbital-debris\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">broke apart<\/a> in space, creating at least 300 pieces of orbiting debris.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nicolls wrote the post when Starlink currently spans over 9,300 satellites in Earth\u2019s orbit, <a href=\"https:\/\/planet4589.org\/space\/con\/star\/stats.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to astronomer and satellite tracker Jonathan McDowell. SpaceX\u2019s satellite constellation has become so large it encompasses about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/space\/elon-musk-starlink-satellites-spacex-b2848690.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noopener\">two-thirds<\/a> of all satellites in low-Earth orbit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" class=\"\" data-image-loader=\"https:\/\/i.pcmag.com\/imagery\/articles\/02aegHnqMweYQqDGMG22a9y-2.png\" data-lazy-sized=\"\" alt=\"Map of Starlink satellites\" data-image-path=\"articles\/02aegHnqMweYQqDGMG22a9y-2.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n    A map of Starlink satellites in orbit.  (satellitemap.space)\n<\/p>\n<p>To prevent potential collisions, SpaceX <a href=\"https:\/\/starlink.com\/satellite-operators\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noopener\">publishes<\/a> its own satellite positioning data while employing \u201cStarlink collision avoidance operators, which are available on a 24\/7 schedule.
