{"id":630368,"date":"2025-12-13T15:33:14","date_gmt":"2025-12-13T15:33:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/630368\/"},"modified":"2025-12-13T15:33:14","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T15:33:14","slug":"irish-fishing-industry-warns-of-thousands-of-job-losses-after-quotas-slashed-in-eu-deal-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/630368\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish fishing industry warns of thousands of job losses after quotas slashed in EU deal \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fishing groups have condemned an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eu\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eu\/\">EU<\/a> fisheries deal reached early on Saturday, describing its outcome as a \u201cbetrayal\u201d of their industry and putting 2,300 costal community jobs in \u201cimmediate danger\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Seafood Ireland Alliance (SIA) has indicated Ireland would have 57,000 tonnes less quota to fish next year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">EU member states reached agreement on fishing in the Atlantic, the North Sea, the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and other waters for 2026 and for certain stocks in 2027 and 2028.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The SIA said Ireland had entered the talks presenting a strong, united front, but was \u201cmet with a slap in the face.\u201d They warned that wider economic impacts could reach \u20ac200 million next year with coastal communities in ports such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/killybegs\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/killybegs\/\">Killybegs<\/a>, Co Donegal; Castletownbere, Co Cork; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/howth\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/howth\/\">Howth<\/a>, Co Dublin facing decimation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The group also accused member states and the EU Commission of reneging on commitments embedded in the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) designed to protect Ireland\u2019s reliance on fishing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Aodh O\u2019Donnell of the Irish Fish Producers Organisation said the deal would deliver a \u20ac94 million hit and threaten the survival of many Irish vessels and seafood businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe EU has failed Ireland\u2019s fishing industry repeatedly. This latest failure means utter devastation and effectively the CFP as a policy has failed,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s symptomatic of a fundamentally unfair system where large member states and big business can dictate what happens to the Irish fishing industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to Mr O\u2019Donnell, Ireland was denied a long-standing insurance mechanism designed to prevent extreme quota cuts \u2013 the Hague Preference, created in 1976 to protect highly dependent fishing nations including Ireland, was blocked by member states for the first time in almost 50 years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dominic Rihan of the Killybegs Fishermen\u2019s Organisation said the deal would see its vessels limited \u201cto less than 20 days fishing a year with tiny quotas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Brendan Byrne of the Irish Fish Processors and Exporters group warned that processing plants now faced a huge threat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey cannot survive without supply. Less quota means less fish and less work. Many plants may not survive this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">John Lynch of the Irish South and East Fish Producers Organisation noted that the Irish fleet had been left with 28 tonnes of sole to catch in 2026 compared to Belgium\u2019s 450 tonnes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister of State for Fisheries, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/timmy-dooley\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/timmy-dooley\/\" target=\"_blank\">Timmy Dooley<\/a>, acknowledged that the outcome of the Agri Fish Council would result in severely reduced fishing opportunities in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said scientific advice upon which the Council\u2019s decisions were based reflect the impact of overfishing of mackerel by certain third countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe advised 70 per cent drop in the total allowable catch for mackerel is compounded by a 41 per cent reduction in blue whiting and a 22 per cent reduction in boarfish,\u201d he said, setting out the results of the deal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIreland has consistently called for action against those countries who overfish mackerel. Given that Ireland holds the largest share of EU quota for mackerel in the western waters area, the devastating impact of the decline in this stock will be acutely felt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Government has called for a clear EU message that actions threatening the sustainability of shared stocks were not acceptable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Dooley expressed extreme disappointment at the actions of a group of member states whom he said had blocked the Hague protection mechanism for Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe Hague Preferences were created to account for Ireland\u2019s underdeveloped fleet and to counter the impact of access to Irish waters provided to vessels of other EU nations,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThese amounts of fish allocated to Ireland from other member states protected our fishing fleet from periods of severely depleted quotas.
