Somalia, 14 December 2025 – The European Union (EU) is expected to formally announce funding for the\u00a0African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM)\u00a0in early 2026, after a two-year period in which it refrained from providing direct financial support, according to documents and diplomatic sources linked to the\u00a0United Nations\u00a0and the\u00a0African Union.<\/p>\n
An EU spokesperson told\u00a0The EastAfrican\u00a0that Brussels remains committed to the continuity of the bloc\u2019s support for the Somalia mission, but said details of the funding package\u2014including the amount, duration, and disbursement mechanism\u2014will be announced once the\u00a027 EU member states\u00a0reach agreement on the overall package.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are committed to ensuring continuity of the European Union\u2019s support. The exact modalities of the support will be announced once the support package is finalised,\u201d the EU spokesperson told\u00a0The EastAfrican.<\/p>\n
Documents related to the\u00a0United Nations Security Council\u00a0indicate that the EU is expected to announce funding for AUSSOM in early 2026, a move widely seen as a signal that the bloc may return to its former role as the\u00a0primary financier of the African Union mission in Somalia.<\/p>\n
The AUSSOM mission is facing significant financial pressure after the EU provided no direct funding for its 2025 operations, while the United States earlier opposed the implementation of a UN-assessed contributions funding model, as outlined in\u00a0UN Security Council Resolution 2719.<\/p>\n
The resolution, adopted in 2023, sought to cover\u00a075 percent\u00a0of AUSSOM\u2019s five-year budget\u2014estimated at\u00a0$832.5 million\u2014to establish a predictable and sustainable funding mechanism.
