{"id":632075,"date":"2025-12-14T14:36:24","date_gmt":"2025-12-14T14:36:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/632075\/"},"modified":"2025-12-14T14:36:24","modified_gmt":"2025-12-14T14:36:24","slug":"devastating-historic-bridge-collapses-into-scottish-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/632075\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Devastating&#8217;: Historic bridge collapses into Scottish river"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  The viaduct, which formerly served the Great North of Scotland Railway, was later paved over and became part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/24994156.landmark-cycle-routes-deliver-record-bike-journeys-scotland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Cycle Network<\/a>.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.moray.gov.uk\/news\/garmouth-viaduct-update-14-december-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Moray Council has confirmed<\/a> that a police cordon has been set up around the 350ft bridge, and has urged residents to stay away from the partially-collapsed structure.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>Moray Council told passersby to avoid the bridge. (Image: Peter Jolly)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A statement read: \u201cDue to a partial collapse, the Garmouth viaduct over the River Spey and immediate surrounding area is closed until further notice.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cOur engineers are aware and will assess the situation before further detail can be provided.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cMembers of the public and media are asked to keep their distance from the rest of the bridge structure.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Images show the middle of the bridge broken in half and reaching the water below.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Reacting to the news, Scottish Conservative MSP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.scot\/msps\/current-and-previous-msps\/tim-eagle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tim Eagle<\/a>, who is based in the area, said he would ask the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/topics\/scottish-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scottish Government<\/a> to help fix the bridge.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He remarked: &#8220;This is a sad and shocking thing to have happened.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;The Spey Bay Bridge is very popular and well used, and will be much missed. Sadly, its closure will cause a very lengthy diversion which I fear may affect local communities and businesses nearby such as the Scottish Dolphin Centre at Spey Bay.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <strong>Read more:<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He added: &#8220;It will be really important to put together a plan for a replacement, if we assume the bridge is beyond repair.
