With trade proving resilient despite global headwinds, China aims to expand both exports and imports next year, leveraging domestic demand to drive more sustainable trade growth<\/a>, a senior official said in Beijing on Saturday.China has long faced calls to address its trade imbalance, fuelled by a record-breaking surplus<\/a> exceeding US$1 trillion in the first 11 months of this year, even as Beijing pledges greater openness as part of the solution.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will expand both exports and imports to drive the sustainable development of foreign trade,\u201d said Han Wenxiu, deputy director of the Central Financial and Economic Affairs Commission\u2019s general office, at an annual conference hosted by the think tank China Centre for International Economic Exchanges, according to state broadcaster CCTV.<\/p>\n

He noted that China would encourage service exports next year and step up efforts to boost digital and green trade.<\/p>\n

In its annual assessment of China\u2019s economy released on Wednesday, the International Monetary Fund said the size of China\u2019s economy and rising global trade tensions made export-driven growth less viable. It urged Beijing to shift towards a consumption-led model<\/a> and reduce its heavy reliance on exports and investment.<\/p>\n
