Photo courtesy: jewishmuseum.org.uk<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>The attack in Sydney was earlier described by Australian authorities as a terrorist attack targeted at members of the Jewish community celebrating the holy festival of Hanukkah, or Chanukah, at the time of the shooting.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Metropolitan Police in London issued a statement in solidarity soon after, reiterating plans to bolster security around synagogues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>\u201cThe news that the Bondi beach attack was an antisemitic terrorist attack against Jewish families at a Chanukah event is sickening,\u201d said Starmer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"832\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/UK-Met-Police-on-motorcycle-Instagram-999response-832x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"Met Police, UK, on motorcycle\" class=\"wp-image-66306\" style=\"width:459px;height:auto\"  \/>Met Police, UK, on motorcycle. We are actively working with the Community Security Trust (CST) on the policing of Chanukah events,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said that two individuals fired on a \u201ccrowded group of families\u201d at the park in a \u201ccowardly act of terrifying violence\u201d. Photo courtesy: jewishmuseum.org.uk<\/p>\n<p>The police urged the public in Britain to continue to remain vigilant at events and in public places.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The scenes in Bondi are shocking and distressing: Australian PM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Australia, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement that his thoughts were with all those affected. \u201cThe scenes in Bondi are shocking and distressing,\u201d he said. \u201cPolice and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mass shooting deaths in Australia are extremely rare. A 1996 massacre in the Tasmanian town of Port Arthur, where a lone gunman killed 35 people, prompted the government to drastically tighten gun laws and made it much more difficult for Australians to acquire firearms.<\/p>\n<p>Significant mass shootings this century included two murder-suicides with death tolls of five people in 2014 and seven in 2018, in which gunmen killed their own families and themselves.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, two police officers were shot and killed by Christian extremists at a rural property in Queensland state.
