{"id":632891,"date":"2025-12-15T00:20:19","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T00:20:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/632891\/"},"modified":"2025-12-15T00:20:19","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T00:20:19","slug":"scottish-runner-taking-on-the-uk-in-memory-of-best-friend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/632891\/","title":{"rendered":"Scottish runner \u2018taking on the UK\u2019 in memory of best friend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Caitlin Andrew, from Clydebank, hopes to become the first Scottish woman to run the length of the country from Land\u2019s End to John O\u2019Groats.<\/p>\n<p>The 25-year-old will cover 827 miles in 35 days, completing a marathon every day from June 1 to July 5 next year.<\/p>\n<p>She is running in memory of her best friend Tyla-Neve Malone, who died at the age of 19 in March, and Ms Andrew aims to raise thousands of pounds for the charity Epilepsy Scotland.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/7e9a84eb-16fc-4b49-8f7f-9b5c4f268ee5.jpeg\" alt=\"Caitlin andrew and Tyla Neve Malone\"  \/>Ms Andrew (left) with Tyla-Neve Malone (Family handout\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the Press Association during a break from her gruelling training schedule, Ms Andrew said Ms Malone\u2019s unexpected death came as a \u201cshock to the system\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe suffered from epilepsy for a good few years and it was just getting really bad towards the end,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer seizures were more frequent, and one day she just didn\u2019t wake up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I was sitting and I\u2019m just going, \u2018how can I raise money?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got the Kiltwalk, you\u2019ve got Ben Lomond, you\u2019ve got all the stuff that everybody does.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Tyla being massive, I was like, \u2018why not do something big?\u2019 And I\u2019m like, \u2018let\u2019s run the UK\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I said to everybody, \u2018I\u2019m thinking of doing this\u2019. And then it got out there and I\u2019m like, \u2018I\u2019m going to have to do this now, aren\u2019t I?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt fits well \u2013 somebody being so massive in everybody\u2019s life, let\u2019s do the biggest thing for her and get her name and her memory out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cI\u2019m taking on the UK \u2013 it\u2019s 827 miles, I\u2019m running from Land\u2019s End up to John O\u2019Groats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Andrew, who works as a boxing and physical training coach, said she is doing gym sessions and running \u201cpretty much every day\u201d in preparation for running 35 marathons in 35 days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe miles themselves \u2013 they\u2019re already intense,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut they\u2019re getting heavier and longer. Going into the new year, my runs will start going up to about two, three-hour runs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then closer to the time it\u2019ll be more, possibly more than 40km (25.8 miles) a day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is tough \u2013 there are days where I\u2019m getting up and I\u2019m going, \u2018I need to go out and run in that rain or wind\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said she was not initially prepared for how hard the training would be, but said she is now \u201cflying\u201d and feeling the benefits physically and emotionally as she processes the grief of losing her best friend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not only for the run itself, it\u2019s keeping me in line,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmotions are high still, with that grief there, because it is so soon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it\u2019s just giving me something to look forward to, and keeping me going with everything in life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Andrew paid tribute to the \u201camazing\u201d support she has received from friends and family \u2013 hers and Ms Malone\u2019s \u2013 who \u201ccouldn\u2019t be prouder\u201d of her, she said.<\/p>\n<p>She added she was \u201cgobsmacked\u201d by the backing she has received from \u201cabsolute strangers\u201d who have seen her posting about the run on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s crazy. I was running through Paisley the other day, and a wee lady just outside the pub, she must have been her late 70s, said, \u2018Excuse me, you\u2019re the girl from TikTok doing the UK run, aren\u2019t you?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverywhere I\u2019m going just now a lot of people are recognising it, especially around the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Andrew said as well as documenting her preparations for the run on social media, she plans to post daily vlogs during the run.<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cI\u2019m looking forward to it. It\u2019s going be a challenge and a half, and I\u2019m ready for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lesslie Young, chief executive of Epilepsy Scotland, said: \u201cEveryone at Epilepsy Scotland is incredibly proud of Caitlin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dedication and effort she is putting into this challenge shows what an extraordinary person she is, and it speaks to how special her friend Tyla must have been.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe funds raised will support the 80,000 people in Scotland living with epilepsy and help raise vital awareness of the fact that epilepsy can in some cases be fatal.
