Britain<\/a>\u2019s new spy<\/a> chief is warning of the acute threat to Europe from an \u201caggressive, expansionist, and revisionist\u201d Russia<\/a> under Vladimir Putin<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Blaise Metreweli accused the Russian president of \u201cexporting chaos\u201d with his war in Ukraine<\/a>, air incursion into eastern Europe<\/a> and hybrid warfare including against Britain.<\/a><\/p>\n

In her first public speech, the new head of MI6<\/a> was due to argue that the \u201cdefining challenge\u201d of the 21st Century is not which nation has the most powerful technologies but who uses them with the \u201cgreatest wisdom\u201d.<\/p>\n

She was also set to emphasise that the \u201cfront line is everywhere\u201d in the face of the threats from Russia and other hostile actors.<\/p>\n

Ms Metreweli is the first female head of MI6.<\/a><\/p>\n

Before taking the helm of the Secret Intelligence Service, she was its Director General \u2018Q\u2019, responsible for technology and innovation, a role made famous by the gadgets boffin in James Bond films.<\/p>\n

Speaking at MI6\u2019s headquarters in central London, she was due to lay out the dangers facing Britain including hybrid threats, terrorism, cyber attacks and information manipulation.<\/p>\n

More specifically, she was set to highlight the acute threat posed by Putin\u2019s \u201caggressive, expansionist, and revisionist\u201d regime.<\/p>\n

On the Ukraine war, she was expected to say: \u201cPutin should be in no doubt, our support is enduring.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe export of chaos is a feature not a bug in the Russian approach to international engagement, and we should be ready for this to continue until Putin is forced to change his calculus.\u201d<\/p>\n

Partnerships with allies and using cutting-edge new technologies are key to protecting the UK\u2019s national security, Ms Metreweli explained.<\/p>\n

But she was also due to stress: \u201cThe defining challenge of the 21st Century is not simply who wields the most powerful technologies, but who guides them with the greatest wisdom.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur security, our prosperity, and our humanity depend on it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not what we can do that defines us, but what we choose to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat choice, the exercise of human agency, has shaped our world before, and it will shape it again.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also gave an insight into how the work of Britain\u2019s spies is changing.<\/p>\n

\u201cMastery of technology must infuse everything we do,\u201d she was due to say.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot just in our labs, but in the field, in our tradecraft, and even more importantly, in the mindset of every officer.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must be as comfortable with lines of code as we are with human sources, as fluent in Python as we are in multiple languages.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Britain\u2019s top soldier was due to rally the country to respond as a \u201cwhole nation\u201d, not just relying on the armed forces, to the growing threats.<\/p>\n

Addressing the Royal United Services Institute for the first time, he was set to say: \u201cThe war in Ukraine shows Putin\u2019s willingness to target neighbouring states, including their civilian populations, potentially with such novel and destructive weapons, threatens the whole of Nato<\/a>, including the UK.<\/p>\n
