The Welsh Rugby Union have vowed to create the right environment to keep the best players in Wales after Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake’s decisions to sign for Gloucester.<\/p>\n
Both Morgan<\/a> and Lake<\/a> have today announced they will be leaving the Ospreys<\/a> at the end of the season to ply their trades in the Gallagher Prem. This will come as a hammer blow for both the Ospreys and Welsh rugby as a whole.<\/p>\n The WRU is currently in the process of restructuring the professional game in Wales and it is their intention to cut the number of professional teams from four to three.<\/p>\n But there is now the very real possibility Wales’ best players will be based in England despite dropping to three professional clubs.<\/p>\n “We are striving to build a world-class system in Wales to maximise the potential for the success of our professional clubs and national teams,” read a WRU statement.<\/p>\n “We want Welsh talent to be at the heart of the system.<\/p>\n “We are, of course, disappointed when players leave the system in Wales.<\/p>\n “But we are also realistic that top-class players will get opportunities to explore new experiences and to challenge themselves as they develop their careers.<\/p>\n “Creating the right environment for Welsh talent in Wales is a fundamental part of the new plans we announced for the Future of Elite Rugby in Wales at the end of October.<\/p>\n “We are at the beginning of that journey and are working with all of the professional clubs to put that new system in place as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n “The WRU has guaranteed all existing player contracts and also written to our regional clubs and the Welsh Rugby Players’ Association to confirm financial support for new signings.<\/p>\n “As we work to create a truly world-class rugby environment in Wales in the next years, we hope that players like Jac and Dewi \u2013 and others \u2013 will come back to Wales<\/p>\n “We wish them both the very best in the meantime \u2013 and we still have them at the heart of our national game from an international perspective.”<\/p>\n The WRU is planning to significantly invest in the pathway while also bringing back a national academy which they hope will produce more and better players.<\/p>\n Both Morgan and Lake will remain eligible to represent Wales despite signing for Gloucester but the controversial 25-cap law is currently under review.<\/p>\n WalesOnline also understands the WRU wrote to the Welsh Rugby Players’ Association (WRPA) on December 9 to guarantee that it will financially support player contracts.<\/p>\n This means that clubs, once they have agreed the terms with the WRU, will have the ability to issue new contracts for players who are deemed high priority.<\/p>\n The WRU has also offered to contract some players centrally while also guaranteeing they will be allocated to the relevant club.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The WRU have responded to Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake’s decisions to leave WalesMorgan and Lake are leaving…\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":634149,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4102],"tags":[4151,79,16,15,14261],"class_list":{"0":"post-634148","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-rugby","8":"tag-rugby","9":"tag-sports","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom","12":"tag-welsh-rugby-union"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115724221001604145","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/634148","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=634148"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/634148\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/634149"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=634148"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=634148"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=634148"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
