TfL first announced plans to extend an Overground line to Bermondsey all the way back in 2009. It was finally approved by Lewisham Council in 2022.\u00a0Then, after years of setbacks, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/news\/this-southeast-london-area-could-be-getting-a-brand-new-overground-station-081224\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 property developers\u00a0said they wanted to drop \u00a317 million on a brand new station next to Millwall Stadium<\/a>. But with no more news, by the end of 2025 south Londoners had all but given up on their dreams of a new Overground hub. Now, however, there\u2019s been an exciting update.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Plans to build\u00a0Surrey Canal Road station have actually moved forward, as Lewisham Council has just approved\u00a0extra funding to construct the Overground terminal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If it actually goes ahead, Surrey Canal Road will be on the Windrush line, with southern connections to Clapham Junction, Crystal Palace, West Croydon, and northern connections to Shoreditch, Hoxton and Highbury and Islington. It would serve the local area, which includes a new 3,500-home housing development being built around Millwall stadium.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Currently, due to its poor connectivity the development faces a Grampian condition which says that building work must pause once it reaches 600 homes. The further 2,900 homes would be unlocked once a new station is built to serve the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So far, TfL has secured \u00a325 million from Renewal Group, which is building the New Bermondsey development and around \u00a31 million from Fosfel Apollo Limited. Lewisham Council has also offered to give TfL funding secured from other developers for this project, with the cabinet\u00a0approving the use of the Strategic Community Infrastructure Levy (SCIL) in September 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If TfL can scrape together enough cash to\u00a0fund the project, Surrey Canal Road station could be complete by 2028.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A new Overground line <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/news\/a-new-overground-line-could-open-in-north-london-by-2027-120525\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">could open in north London by 2027<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>London is set for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/news\/london-is-set-for-a-new-700-million-overground-line-102025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new \u00a3700 million Overground line<\/a>.\u00a0<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Get the latest and greatest from the Big Smoke \u2013 from news and reviews to events and trends.
