{"id":636514,"date":"2025-12-16T18:36:18","date_gmt":"2025-12-16T18:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/636514\/"},"modified":"2025-12-16T18:36:18","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T18:36:18","slug":"uk-to-rejoin-eu-erasmus-student-exchange-scheme-from-2027","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/636514\/","title":{"rendered":"UK to rejoin EU Erasmus student exchange scheme from 2027"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">British students will be able to study abroad at European universities under a flagship EU scheme for the first time since Brexit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Ministers will announce on Wednesday that the UK is rejoining the Erasmus student exchange programme from 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The move will mean that British students will be able to spend a year studying at European universities as part of their UK degree courses while not paying any additional fees, and vice versa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The announcement is the first tangible outcome of Sir Keir Starmer\u2019s reset with the EU and follows talks last week between Nick Thomas-Symonds, the Europe minister, and his EU counterpart Maros Sefcovic. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Both sides needed to agree on a deal before the new year in order for UK students to participate in Erasmus from 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Under the plans, to be set out to MPs on Wednesday, British <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/topic\/universities\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">universities<\/a> will be able to be associated with the Erasmus scheme to allow their students to spend up to a year out of their course at a European university while EU students will be able to come to the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Students would continue to pay tuition fees to their home university but would not face any additional charges and would be eligible for a grant to help with the additional costs of living abroad. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/money\/tax\/article\/why-graduates-need-to-earn-66k-to-beat-the-student-loan-trap-g6t35fs2d\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Why graduates need to earn \u00a366k to beat the student loan trap<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The scheme would also be open to further education colleges, sports exchanges and some forms of work placements. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">In negotiations the UK government has argued for a discount on membership fees which is calculated on the basis of GDP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Before Brexit, the UK was a net contributor to Erasmus, with more European students coming to Britain than UK students studying abroad and it was estimated to cost the taxpayer more than \u00a3200 million a year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The EU is understood to have offered the government a 30 per cent reduction of fees in the first year of membership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">A senior government source said rejoining Erasmus would be \u201cgood news\u201d for students and universities and underlined the benefits of the government\u2019s wider reset.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The move has also been welcomed by Brussels. Sources said the European Commission was delighted to get the deal over the line. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Vivienne Stern, chief executive of Universities UK, described it as<b> <\/b>\u201cfantastic news for the UK, and for students and universities here and across Europe\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">She said: \u201cThe agreement marks a huge step forward in our relationship with the EU and will offer life-changing opportunities for thousands of students.
