But before you attempt to crush your usual workout, there are a few things you should know. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">Colds can come with a wide range of symptoms and they all impact your ability to exercise a little differently, says <a href=\"https:\/\/wexnermedical.osu.edu\/find-a-doctor\/michael-jonesco-do-41447\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/wexnermedical.osu.edu\/find-a-doctor\/michael-jonesco-do-41447\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Michael Jonesco\" data-node-id=\"1.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Jonesco<\/a>, DO, a sports medicine physician at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">One common denominator, though: When you have a cold, your body jumps into overdrive to try to fight it, leaving you feeling tired in the process. That can mean less muscle strength and endurance, resulting in you feeling wiped out much earlier in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a64411304\/ashley-nicole-strength-transformation-after-40-before-and-after\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a64411304\/ashley-nicole-strength-transformation-after-40-before-and-after\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"workout\" data-node-id=\"2.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">workout<\/a> than you normally would, he explains.<\/p>\n<p>Related Stories<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">Fitness can help you feel better, though. &#8220;Exercise releases a lot of hormones that may make you feel great, independent of having a cold,&#8221; says infectious disease specialist <a href=\"https:\/\/centerforhealthsecurity.org\/who-we-are\/our-people\/amesh-adalja-md-fidsa\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/centerforhealthsecurity.org\/who-we-are\/our-people\/amesh-adalja-md-fidsa\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Amesh Adalja\" data-node-id=\"5.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Amesh Adalja<\/a>, MD, senior scholar at Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">Keep in mind, though, that if you overdo it when you have a cold, you could actually make things worse. \u201cExercising too hard when you\u2019re sick can make it more difficult for your body to fight off the infection and it can take longer for you to get better,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/kerlanjobe.org\/physicians\/kenton-h-fibel-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/kerlanjobe.org\/physicians\/kenton-h-fibel-md\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Kenton Fibel\" data-node-id=\"6.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Kenton Fibel<\/a>, MD, a primary care sports medicine specialist at Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Anaheim. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">Not to mention, &#8220;trying to sweat a bunch can cause dehydration, and you really want to make sure you stay hydrated when you&#8217;re sick,&#8221; adds trainer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kkol21\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kkol21\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Katie Kollath\" data-node-id=\"7.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Katie Kollath<\/a>, CPT, co-founder of online training service Barpath Fitness.<\/p>\n<p>Related Story<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">TL;DR: Even if you\u2019re just dealing with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a38334430\/how-long-is-a-cold-contagious\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a38334430\/how-long-is-a-cold-contagious\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"common cold\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">common cold<\/a>, don&#8217;t feel obligated to &#8220;sweat it out.&#8221; Listen to your body and only exercise at a level that makes you feel good.<\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"10.0\">So, when is it truly okay to work out with a cold?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"body-text css-auya5i emevuu60\">If you have a cold and do want to exercise, follow the \u201cneck rule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">\u201cIf all of your symptoms are above the neck, you\u2019re safe to work out,&#8221; says Dr. Adam. &#8220;But if you have symptoms that are below the neck, then you probably shouldn\u2019t exercise. That&#8217;s the rule I use whenever I have an athlete that wants to work out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\"><strong data-node-id=\"13.0\">Under this rule, you&#8217;re okay to work out with these symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-9b1pbo emevuu60\">\n<li data-node-id=\"14.0\">Runny nose<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"14.1\">Nasal congestion<\/li>\n<li data-node-id=\"14.2\">Sore throat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">But don&#8217;t consider it permission to go all-out or push for a PR. \u201cThis is not the time to go and do your most intense exercise routine,\u201d Dr. Adam says. \u201cYour body is still fighting an infectious disease, after all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-auya5i emevuu60\">Your best bet: Get outside. &#8220;Going for a nice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a64434477\/4-week-walking-plan-burn-fat-build-muscle-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-node-id=\"16.1\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/fitness\/a64434477\/4-week-walking-plan-burn-fat-build-muscle-pdf\/\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"low-intensity walk\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">low-intensity walk<\/a> in the sunshine can definitely facilitate some healthy blood flow throughout the body and allow you to soak up some vitamin D (which strengthens the immune system),&#8221; says Kollath.
