Carey made a crucial 106 as <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/sport\/cricket\/the-ashes-third-test-score-36413350\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Australia finished day one of the third Ashes Test<\/a> on 326-8, but should have been dismissed on 72.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/australia-cricket-team\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Australia<\/a> wicket-keeper appeared to edge a Josh Tongue delivery behind to Jamie Smith when the home side were on 245-6. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/england-cricket-team\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">England<\/a> appealed but it was given not out by umpire Ahsan Raza, forcing <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/ben-stokes\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Ben Stokes<\/a> to send the decision upstairs for a review.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The replay showed a spike on the \u2018Snicko\u2019 \u2013 the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/tech\/\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">technology<\/a> used to tell if there was contact with the bat. But the spike came a few frames before the ball passed the bat, forcing TV umpire Chris Gaffaney to stick with the on-field decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">England were bemused and angry with the call, especially as Jamie Smith had been given out in a similar incident the first Test at Perth when the spike came well after the ball passed his bat and gloves. I think if I was given out I would have reviewed it, probably not confidently though. Just the way <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/sport\/cricket\/\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">cricket<\/a> goes sometimes isn\u2019t it? You have a bit of luck and maybe it went my way this time.\u201d Asked if he was a walker, Carey joked: \u201cClearly not!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">England bowling coach David Saker hinted that the tourists may contact match referee Jeff Crowe to make their complaints heard. \u2018Snicko\u2019 has been a constant talking point throughout the series, with complaints it has not lined up with the TV pictures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI don&#8217;t think we&#8217;ve done anything about it so far but after today, maybe that might go a bit further,\u201d Saker said. \u201cThere have been concerns about it for the whole series. We shouldn&#8217;t be talking about this after a day&#8217;s play, it should just be better than that. It is what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The replay of the incident caused confusion for fans and commentators alike.
