{"id":639595,"date":"2025-12-18T04:59:16","date_gmt":"2025-12-18T04:59:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/639595\/"},"modified":"2025-12-18T04:59:16","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T04:59:16","slug":"british-steel-still-cant-escape-brexit-taxes-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/639595\/","title":{"rendered":"British steel still can\u2019t escape Brexit taxes \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/GettyImages-2251648080-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7682085\"  \/>Despite Starmer supposedly securing a widely-trumpeted exception back in May, those tariffs still remain in place. | Pool Photo by Alastair Grant via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not exempting anyone,\u201d European Commissioner for Climate Wopke\u00a0Hoekstra\u00a0told a press conference Wednesday.\u00a0 \u201cBut the moment we will be fully linking those [carbon markets], it is likely that there will be an exemption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hoekstra added that \u201cthe price that [the U.K.] will be paying is actually minimal\u201d and that that was \u201cjust one of the realities of how the system works.\u201d While the scheme technically starts from Jan. 1, declarations of the carbon embedded in imports \u2014 and the associated fees \u2014 won\u2019t be due until September 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Adam Berman, director of policy and advocacy at trade body Energy UK, told a briefing of journalists ahead of the announcement: \u201cI understand the position of the European Commission, which is that they will inevitably be concerned that any exemption that they might offer on an ad hoc basis to a country like the U.K. would then lead to countries like China and India \u2014 which are the main targets of the CBAM \u2014 turning around and saying: \u2018Why don\u2019t you give us equal treatment?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One EU official, granted anonymity to speak candidly, told POLITICO: \u201cThe companies, or the sectors that are actually concerned when it comes to the U.K., are very limited. So there will be an impact, but it will be very, very limited. And it will be also limited in time, because once the ETS agreement is in place it won&#8217;t be a question anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A U.K. government official said: \u201cETS linkage will remove CBAM.
