proposed for several Birmingham roads in a bid to improve safety around a school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The city council has this week launched a public consultation on plans to introduce numerous measures to tackle road safety concerns in the area around Chilcote School in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/billesley-and-hall-green\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Hall Green<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">These include bollards to prevent vehicles from mounting the pavement and double yellow lines to restrict parking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The local authority is also proposing to implement 20mph speed limits on the following roads near the school:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Baldwins Lane (between Gracemere Crescent eastern junction and Primrose Lane).<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Barton Lodge Road (between Baldwins Lane and Scribers Lane).<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Scribers Lane (between Baldwins Lane and Barton Lodge Road).<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Hilton Avenue, Morris Field Croft, Chilcote Close and Barton Croft.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In a letter to residents, the council said the Chilcote Safer Route to School scheme forms part of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Birmingham<\/a> \u2019s broader transport plan, which seeks to \u201cmeet the demands of the future by prioritising people over cars\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThis scheme is being proposed to address road safety concerns in the area along and around Chilcote School,\u201d it read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThis project is funded by the Local Improvement Budget \u2013 Transportation and Highways Fund, which seeks to address minor transport issues that are identified at a ward level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" \u201cAfter the consultation closes, we will review all responses and make any necessary changes to the scheme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cShould the decision be made to proceed with the scheme, the 20mph proposals will be implemented under a Traffic Regulation Order (the legal document needed to make changes on roads).\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The other proposals would include the installation of:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Pedestrian refuges to improve crossing movements for people walking.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Refuges to provide waiting areas when crossing wider roads.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Speed cushions to slow down vehicles.<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Additional school warning signs to alert drivers to the presence of children and school crossing points.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Residents have until January 9 to respond to the consultation, which can be found on the Birmingham Be Heard website.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">\u2018We must change travel habits\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The city council\u2019s broader transport plan says \u201cfundamental changes\u201d are needed to the city\u2019s transport network to tackle the climate emergency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cPrivate cars will never be able to match the capacity of mass public transport for getting people to where they want to go,\u201d the plan says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe need to work with our partners to secure investment and make Birmingham a place where walking, cycling and using public transport are the best and preferred modes of travel for most people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cEven then, we must all fundamentally change our travel habits, and reduce the overall amount we travel by car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Earlier this year, the UK\u2019s first road safety commissioner backed 20mph limits in Birmingham \u2013 and said he would like to see speed limit cuts on more city streets.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">This came after the city council confirmed towards the end of last year that it was exploring the possibility of introducing more 20mph speed limits on city roads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">City transport boss Coun Majid Mahmood said at the time that slower speed limits on appropriate roads would reduce collisions and save lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cFor this reason, our Birmingham transport plan sets out that 20mph should be the speed limit in residential areas and where footfall is high,\u201d he said. \u201cOther types of roads will remain unaffected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He continued: \u201cApproximately one third of the city\u2019s roads are already subject to a 20mph speed limit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe would like to expand the number of roads subject to this speed limit where appropriate and are currently exploring opportunities to carry this out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">READ MORE: <\/strong><a TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/nhs\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">NHS<\/a> doctor appointed road safety commissioner by West Midlands mayor Richard Parker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">At a meeting this year, he argued 20mph zones had a \u201csignificant impact\u201d on reducing collisions and serious injury and death rates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Any plans to introduce more 20mph limits in Birmingham would have to go through consultation first.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Birmingham
