Swans that died at a popular park in Cardiff died of avian flu, it has been confirmed. Cardiff Council<\/a> made their announcement after the two animals were found dead in Roath Park recently.<\/p>\n

Multiple swans have been found dead at the lake in Wales’ capital, with another confirmed case of bird flu earlier this month in Cardiff Bay.<\/a> Cardiff<\/a> Council has warned the public to avoid contact with dead or sick birds as a precaution and to not feed wild birds around the city.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Cardiff Council said: “Testing carried out by the Animal and Plant Health Agency has confirmed that two swans, found dead at Roath Park Lake, died of avian flu. Avian Flu has previously been confirmed in a bird that died at Cardiff Bay<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“The risk to public health is low as it is rare for the H5N1 strain of the flu to be passed on to humans, but as a precaution, please avoid contact with dead or sick birds.<\/p>\n

“Please also avoid feeding wild birds in public places as this encourages them to gather, increasing the risk of transmission.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, December 16 RSPCA Cymru made the decision to euthanise a number of swans<\/a> after the outbreak in Roath Park.<\/p>\n

A statement on the charity’s Facebook<\/a> page said: “We\u2019d like to thank those who have expressed concern about a number of swans at Roath Park, Cardiff. Sadly, to alleviate their distress, we have had to humanely euthanise a number of swans with suspected avian flu.<\/p>\n

“The Animal Plant Health Agency has recently confirmed an avian flu case in Cardiff Bay and are also testing the bodies of swans found at Roath Park.<\/p>\n
