{"id":640311,"date":"2025-12-18T13:43:16","date_gmt":"2025-12-18T13:43:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/640311\/"},"modified":"2025-12-18T13:43:16","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T13:43:16","slug":"welsh-ministers-humiliated-by-starmer-government-says-labour-ms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/640311\/","title":{"rendered":"Welsh ministers &#8216;humiliated&#8217; by Starmer government, says Labour MS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Davies was one of 11 backbench Labour Members of the Senedd (MSs) who signed the letter attacking the way that funding for the town centres plan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/214m-new-funding-for-welsh-communities-to-improve-neighbourhoods-and-restore-pride\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pride in Place, external<\/a>, is going directly from the UK government to local councils including those in Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It uses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/ceq11yn8llro\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a law that gives the UK government powers to spend money in areas that are usually controlled by the Welsh government.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Another signatory to the letter, Jenny Rathbone, said the policy was &#8220;pitting one deprived area from another&#8221; and that the money had been &#8220;top-sliced&#8221; from funding to the Welsh government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;So, that is why this is so devastating and it is absolutely about the everyday affairs of the people I represent,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The UK government previously said Pride in Place will let local people decide priorities for their areas, and that the funding was &#8220;on top of the record funding we&#8217;ve already given to Wales&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But Plaid leader Rhun ap Iorwerth said the UK government was &#8220;bypassing devolution altogether&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Conservative MS James Evans meanwhile said arguments about the devolution settlement &#8220;are not only tiring, they are actively distracting us from the serious challenges that the people of Wales face&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Responding to the debate, Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies repeated Welsh government calls to devolve powers over the Crown Estate and the justice system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The strength of our record as a Welsh Labour government and as a Welsh Labour party is that we stand up for devolution and we deliver for the people of Wales,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Davies was one of 11 backbench Labour Members of the Senedd (MSs) who signed the letter attacking the&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":640312,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5010],"tags":[748,4884,16,15,1764],"class_list":{"0":"post-640311","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-wales","8":"tag-britain","9":"tag-great-britain","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom","12":"tag-wales"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115740869204889728","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/640311","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=640311"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/640311\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/640312"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=640311"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=640311"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=640311"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
