Network Rail has just rolled out a huge\u00a0update\u00a0to rail timetables across the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The revamp launched on December 14 and includes the biggest upgrade to the East Coast Main Line timetable in a decade. With help from \u00a34bn worth of funding over the last ten years, journeys are now even faster and more frequent \u2013 the last time we saw this level of change to the UK\u2019s train timetables was in 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As of this week, there are nearly double the number of weekday trains between <strong>Newcastle and London King\u2019s Cross<\/strong>, a new\u00a0new hourly fast service with Northern between <strong>Leeds and Sheffield<\/strong>, additional services between <strong>Middlesbrough and Newcastle<\/strong>, and six LNER services\u00a0in each direction between <strong>Bradford Forster Square and London King\u2019s Cross<\/strong> every Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, Network Rail has boosted TransPennine Express services between<strong> Newcastle and Edinburgh Waverley<\/strong> to eight trains per day (each direction) from Monday to Saturday and seven trains each\u00a0way on Sunday.\u00a0There are also\u00a0two trains per hour between <strong>Nottingham and Lincoln<\/strong> Monday to Saturday instead of just one. All passing\u00a0services operated by Greater Anglia, Great Northern, Thameslink and CrossCountry will\u00a0stop by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/uk\/news\/this-picturesque-english-city-is-getting-a-new-200-million-railway-station-060523\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new Cambridge South station<\/a> when it opens in summer 2026.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"59e34e74-2f09-1a0e-15ee-e8e3da6a4223\" class=\"photo lazy inline\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"lazy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1766077827_362_image.webp.webp\" alt=\"Edinburgh Waverley train station\" data-caption=\"\" data-credit=\"Photograph: Shutterstock\" data-width-class=\"\" data-image-id=\"106201764\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\nPhotograph: Shutterstock&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the changes,\u00a0the entire\u00a0East Coast Main Line has\u00a0more than 60,000 extra seats available each week.\u00a0Journey times along the route are faster, too. The trip from <strong>London to Edinburgh has gone down by 15 minutes<\/strong>, and <strong>London to Newcastle and Edinburgh to York have both gone down by 10 minutes<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s more! Elsewhere on the UK\u2019s rail network there\u00a0are now\u00a0more\u00a0Avanti West Coast services\u00a0between <strong>London Euston and Liverpool<\/strong>, more independent services from Grand Central, Hull Trains and Lumo, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/uk\/news\/this-historic-scottish-city-is-officially-getting-a-direct-train-service-to-london-060325\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provision for a new Stirling to London Euston service<\/a>\u00a0and more Transport for Wales trains\u00a0between Chester and Wrexham and\u00a0between Swansea and Shrewsbury.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Peter Hendy, the UK rail minister, said: \u2018This is the biggest timetable change on the East Coast Main Line in more than a decade, and it marks a major step forward for passengers and communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Thanks to \u00a34 billion of investment, we\u2019re delivering faster journeys, thousands of extra seats, more cheap fares, and better connections across the country \u2013 and it is needed, with the North East seeing the highest growth in rail passenger journeys in the UK last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018These improvements won\u2019t just make travel easier \u2013 they\u2019ll open up access to jobs, unlock new homes, and create opportunities for growth along the route.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t miss: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/uk\/news\/revealed-the-busiest-travel-days-predicted-for-christmas-2025-111925\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The busiest travel days predicted for Christmas 2025<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Plus: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/uk\/news\/the-international-train-station-just-outside-london-that-has-had-a-1-million-refurb-121625\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">An\u00a0\u2018international\u2019 train station just outside London has had a \u00a31 million refurb<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Get the latest and greatest from the Big Smoke \u2013 from news and reviews to events and trends.
