{"id":640834,"date":"2025-12-18T19:36:18","date_gmt":"2025-12-18T19:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/640834\/"},"modified":"2025-12-18T19:36:18","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T19:36:18","slug":"university-lecturers-suspend-strike-action-after-compulsory-job-cuts-ruled-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/640834\/","title":{"rendered":"University lecturers suspend strike action after compulsory job cuts ruled out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the University and College Union (UCU) previously backed a mandate for strike action lasting until April 29, amid a dispute over the university\u2019s plans to cut its budget by \u00a3140 million.<\/p>\n<p>Lecturers and other staff have already walked out on nine days 2025, and were warning of further action \u2013 including a possible marking and assessment boycott \u2013 if the university failed to rule out compulsory redundancies and engage in \u201cmeaningful talks\u201d to end the dispute.<\/p>\n<p>The university\u2019s offer, which was \u201cnarrowly\u201d accepted by UCU members, rules out compulsory redundancies until July 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Other concessions include a voluntary redundancy scheme for all academic and at-risk professional services staff, and the university\u2019s commitment to meaningful consultation with UCU over its programme of organisational change.<\/p>\n<p>The university has also agreed to improve its redeployment offer to staff, to freeze external recruitment in most cases, and to be more \u201ctransparent\u201d around protected conversations with staff.<\/p>\n<p>The news came as UCU members at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) voted to end their own dispute over compulsory redundancies, which had been running since August.<\/p>\n<p>They had previously walked out for two days in October.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution came after UHI ruled out compulsory redundancies at its executive office for a calendar year, as well as agreeing to review its avoidance of redundancy policy, and to work with UCU reps to manage staff workload and address poor staff morale.<\/p>\n<p>UCU general secretary Jo Grady welcomed both developments, but warned the dispute at the University of Edinburgh is \u201cfar from over\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cIt is heartening to see the progress made in both universities, to get concrete wins for members and to improve job security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is clear that in Edinburgh the battle is far from over, and that members remain suspicious of their employer and need to be convinced that the employer is committed to working with UCU in the best interests of staff, students and education at the university.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2.81529595.jpg\" alt=\"Edinburgh University UCU industrial action\" data-title=\"Edinburgh University UCU industrial action\" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Wire\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Wire\/PA Images\" data-credit=\"Jane Barlow\" data-usage-terms=\"Use subject to restrictions.
