While Newcastle spent around £240million in the summer of 2025, their squad remains light in key areas.

They could certainly do with cover in central defence following Dan Burn’s injury. Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento, meanwhile, do not have a huge amount of support at full-back.

Goals are currently a problem too, so perhaps signing a new forward could be a wise idea.

With that in mind, plans from the Newcastle United owners sound very exciting.

Newcastle United could spend £100m on three new players in January 2026

According to The Chronicle, the owners are ready to afford Howe more funds to strengthen the Newcastle United squad in January.

It’s claimed that while there are no major plans for surgery on the squad, specific areas will be targeted.

Signings could come at centre-back, full-back and up front, with a budget of around £100million potentially available.

Should Newcastle get those signings right, it would be a major boost for Howe.

Still, not many of their summer signings have so far proved worth the money, so questions do need to be asked of the recruitment policy before the window.

Photo by Oli SCARFF / AFP via Getty ImagesFinance expert reveals what spending £100m in January would do to Newcastle United’s summer 2026 transfer budget

Spending that kind of money in January would be relatively new ground for Newcastle, aside from PIF’s first transfer window back in January 2022.

With that in mind, Geordie Boot Boys spoke to finance expert Adam Williams, and the website asked his expert opinion on what spending £100million in January could do Newcastle’s transfer budget for the remainder of that year.

The Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) are a moving beast, so the future does need to be taken into account.

Still, Williams believes that money could still be available next summer even if they do spend heavily in January.

“Partly because of the Alexander Isak sale and partly because of the way Newcastle structure transfers, a £100m outlay in January wouldn’t mean a corresponding £100m decrease in spending in the summer,” he told us.

Who is the one player you were FURIOUS with Newcastle United for selling? Go back as far as you want!

I’ll start: I’m still not over Mike Ashley selling Andy Carroll to Liverpool all those years ago!😡

Credit: Carl Recine – Pool/Alex Pantling via Getty Images

👇 Join the debate; share your insight. From a PSR perspective, they don’t have to worry.

“With Champions League income this season and, again, the profit on the Isak sale, they have loads of headroom for the three-year PSR assessment up to the end of 2025-26. After that, the new Squad Cost Ratio, or SCR, system comes in.

“There won’t be any immediate concerns there either, partly because Newcastle are aiming to get within UEFA’s financial spending rules anyway, which are set lower than the Premier League, and partly because the new domestic rules allow leeway from one season to the next. It’s only if you consistently overspend that you will be penalised.”

Sign up to TalkingPoints for free to join the conversation about all things Newcastle United with Geordie Boot Boys!

 Join Our Newsletter

Receive a digest of our best Newcastle content each week direct to your mailbox

For the first time in three years, the January transfer window could be a busy time for Newcastle…

[4100
814,94,55404,79,16,15
0":"post-641620","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-football","8":"tag-eddie-howe","9":"tag-football","10":"tag-pif","11":"tag-sports","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
