Yan Hodkinson, from St Helens, died last week aged 47. In a heartbreaking tribute, his partner Jayne Chisnall, 46, said his death has come as a massive shock to her.

Yan and Jayne had been together for 29 years, having first met as teenagers through mutual friends. They had three children together – Jack, 20, Ruby, 16, and Max, 11. Jayne described Yan as the “life and soul of every party”. Speaking to the ECHO, Jayne said: “He was amazing. Everybody who met him knew they had met him. He loved playing pranks on people. Everybody’s got a funny tale to tell about him.”

Yan was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, a form of bowel disease, in 2023 despite never experiencing ill health before. Jayne said he became quite poorly but was “getting through it”.

Then, in December of last year, Yan started getting a “hoarse voice”. He put it down to his medication, but the issue continued.

Jayne said: ”Through to January, he had a flare up with his ulcerative colitis again and then he kept getting a sore throat. In April time, we lost his mum and he wasn’t very well then.

“He was being treated for tonsillitis at the time. Then there was swelling in his neck, so I was pushing him and said, there’s something not right here.”

Yan was then diagnosed with stage four squamous cell carcinoma in June. This is a form of skin cancer and symptoms often include bumps and growths on the skin.

Jayne described Yan as the ‘life and soul of every party'(Image: Supplied)

Doctors told Yan that the cancer had started on his left tonsil and spread to his tongue and jaw. He also had developed tumours in his neck.

Treatment seemed to go well though. Jayne said: “They let him come home and said he was doing well.”

However, last Sunday (December 14), Yan had a carotid blowout. This is where the carotid artery bursts, usually from advanced neck or head cancer, causing severe bleeding.

Yan was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead when he arrived. Jayne and the family are still coming to terms with the awful news.

Jayne said: ”He was doing so well, but because of the radiation and the tumours wrapped around these major arteries in his neck, it’s caused a lot of damage and it’s been fatal for him. It’s absolutely devastating. The children are heartbroken but have been absolute rocks.”

A JustGiving crowdfunding page has been set-up in Yan’s memory. He was a self-employed electrician but due to his illness was unable to work in the last months of his life. As Jayne had to take sick leave to look after him, they had no income coming to him.

The fundraiser will go towards the funeral costs and the children. Jayne is also hoping the campaign can raise awareness about HPV-led cancer, which Yan had. Children in schools can now be vaccinated against this.

Jayne said: “This year has been such a tragic and sad year. Me and the kids will miss him forever.”

You can find out more about the fundraiser here.

His partner said it had been a ‘sad and tragic year’ 00:01, 19 Dec 2025Updated 06:16, 19 Dec…

[11
105,6513,2645,16,15
0":"post-641924","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-health","8":"tag-health","9":"tag-health-and-fitness","10":"tag-st-helens","11":"tag-uk","12":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
