{"id":641984,"date":"2025-12-19T09:51:12","date_gmt":"2025-12-19T09:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/641984\/"},"modified":"2025-12-19T09:51:12","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T09:51:12","slug":"us-suspends-diversity-visa-lottery-after-brown-uni-shooting-dw-12-19-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/641984\/","title":{"rendered":"US suspends diversity visa lottery after Brown Uni shooting \u2013 DW \u2013 12\/19\/2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US homeland security chief Kristi Noem said late\u00a0on Thursday that <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/us-president-donald-trump-russia-ukraine-israel-gaza-tariffs-trade-war\/t-19434433\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Donald Trump<\/a> ordered her to pause the diversity visa lottery which was used by the suspect at the Brown University shooting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At President Trump&#8217;s direction, I am immediately directing USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) to pause the DV1 program to ensure no more Americans are harmed by this disastrous program.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How is the visa suspension linked to the Brown University shooting?<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/trump-admin-paves-way-for-mass-deportation-of-venezuelans\/a-71450952\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Noem said the shooting suspect entered the US in 2017 using the diversity lottery immigrant visa program (DV1).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The suspect, a\u00a048-year-old Portuguese man who two decades earlier was a Brown University student,\u00a0later obtained a green card under the same program.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tweet embed\" data-id=\"2001873077089767435\"\/>\n<p>&#8220;This heinous individual should never have been allowed in our country,&#8221; Noem said.<\/p>\n<p>Last week,\u00a0two people were killed and\u00a0nine others were wounded in a\u00a0<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/brown-university-shooting-police-say-multiple-people-shot\/a-75148185\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mass shooting at Brown University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/brown-university-shooting-suspect-found-dead\/a-75235322\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Authorities\u00a0on Thursday\u00a0found the suspect\u00a0dead<\/a>\u00a0of self-inflicted wounds at\u00a0a storage facility in the state of New Hampshire and are investigating the case.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators believe the man was also responsible for the killing of Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro, who was fatally shot in Boston on Monday, US\u00a0Attorney for Massachusetts Leah B.
