{"id":643955,"date":"2025-12-20T09:16:35","date_gmt":"2025-12-20T09:16:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/643955\/"},"modified":"2025-12-20T09:16:35","modified_gmt":"2025-12-20T09:16:35","slug":"picardo-tells-tory-brexiteers-they-are-wrong-on-gibraltar-treaty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/643955\/","title":{"rendered":"Picardo tells Tory Brexiteers they are \u2018wrong\u2019 on Gibraltar treaty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chief Minister Fabian Picardo told prominent Tory Brexiteer MPs they were \u201cwrong\u201d on the UK\/EU treaty on Gibraltar, after the Telegraph quoted them describing the agreement as \u201ca ridiculous disaster\u201d by a Labour Government that was using Gibraltar \u201cas a lever\u201d to get closer to the EU.<\/p>\n<p>The Telegraph story came after the Chronicle reported earlier this week that negotiation on the text of the treaty was now concluded and was undergoing legal review ahead of publication and ratification.<\/p>\n<p>The UK newspaper said the deal would hand the EU control of Gibraltar\u2019s border, prompting thorny reactions from some Tory MPs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis deal on Gibraltar is a ridiculous disaster and a very good example of cowardly posturing by [Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer] in the hope that he will get closer relationships with Europe,\u201d said Conservative MP and former party leader Iain Duncan Smith, a supporter of Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re using Gibraltar as a lever to get themselves back closer to Europe. He wants to undo Brexit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole plan of this Labour Government who hated Brexit is that over a period of time, it will become impossible for us not to rejoin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark Francois, the chairman of the European Research Group and a staunch Brexiteer, also chimed in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst a sell-out on Chagos and now an infringement of the rights of Gibraltarians, and that hard on the heels of paying over the odds to re-enter the EU\u2019s Erasmus scheme,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have argued before that \u2018Starmer Remains a Remainer\u2019 at heart but now he\u2019s not even bothering to hide it \u2013 he\u2019s going to try and take us back in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On social media, another Brexiteer Tory, Suella Braverman, shared the Telegraph article and said: \u201cExactly as I warned in June.
