Harvey Elliott<\/a> was in tears as he drove away from Liverpool on deadline day, but the midfielder could now return to Anfield following a disastrous loan at Aston Villa<\/a>.<\/b><\/p>\n

Elliott courted interest from a number of clubs throughout the summer transfer window, but with no deal progressing he joined Villa on an initial loan on September 1.<\/p>\n

It came after \u201cagonising\u201d over his future, according to the Mail\u2018s Lewis Steele, who claims the 22-year-old was \u201cin tears\u201d as he left his boyhood club.<\/p>\n

The Harvey Elliott<\/a> situation: A quick look<\/b><\/p>\n

\u2022 The frozen clause:<\/b> Unai Emery appears reluctant to trigger a \u00a335m permanent transfer clause, leaving Elliott frozen out and stuck between a disastrous loan and a difficult return to Merseyside.<\/p>\n

\u2022 January dilemma:<\/b> Due to FIFA rules, Elliott can only play for Liverpool<\/b> or Villa<\/b> this season. While a return to Arne Slot<\/a><\/b>\u2018s squad is possible, it would represent a backwards step following the summer arrival of Florian Wirtz<\/a><\/b>.<\/p>\n

\u2022 European interest:<\/b> Before joining Villa, Elliott was considered by Brighton<\/a><\/b>, Leipzig<\/b>, Bayer Leverkusen<\/a><\/b>, and Dortmund<\/b>, with Liverpool previously demanding a fee in excess of \u00a350m for the 22-year-old.<\/p>\n

But three-and-a-half months later there is a chance Elliott is sent back to Liverpool, having been frozen out by Unai Emery who is clearly reluctant to hit the 10-appearance target that would trigger a \u00a335 million permanent transfer.<\/p>\n

Speaking in a live Q&A<\/a> on Wednesday, Steele explained: \u201cHe spent the whole summer agonising over whether to leave or not, because Liverpool are his boyhood club.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen he was driving to Villa he was in tears about the fact that it didn\u2019t quite work out for him at Liverpool.\u201d<\/p>\n

A FIFA rule against playing for more than two clubs in any one season means Elliott cannot return to Liverpool in January before heading out again either on loan or permanently.<\/p>\n

It leaves only two options: stay at Villa and try to force his way into Emery\u2019s plans or rejoin Arne Slot<\/a>\u2018s squad at Anfield.<\/p>\n

Elliott would almost certainly prefer the latter, but that would effectively resemble a backwards step having already resolved to leave the club following the signing of Florian Wirtz<\/a> from Bayer Leverkusen<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Why Liverpool may not want Harvey Elliott to return<\/p>\n

Furthermore, as Steele detailed, there would be financial reasons for Liverpool holding firm on keeping Elliott at Villa.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe clubs could shake hands in January on terminating the loan agreement, but it doesn\u2019t really benefit anyone,\u201d the journalist continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe he should come back, but it doesn\u2019t really suit Liverpool in terms of financial position for him to come back.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think about the other clubs that are interested \u2013 for the summer it would have to be \u2013 his value has [plummeted].\u201d<\/p>\n

Brighton<\/a>, Bayer Leverkusen<\/a>, RB Leipzig and Dortmund were all credited with an interest in the summer, along with a number of clubs in Spain.<\/p>\n
