{"id":644641,"date":"2025-12-20T17:45:49","date_gmt":"2025-12-20T17:45:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/644641\/"},"modified":"2025-12-20T17:45:49","modified_gmt":"2025-12-20T17:45:49","slug":"britain-to-rejoin-eus-erasmus-student-exchange-program-in-brexit-reversal-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/644641\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain to rejoin EU\u2019s Erasmus student exchange program in Brexit reversal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>      London<br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmja28uzs00662coz1z125flc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Britain announced that it will rejoin the European Union\u2019s Erasmus student exchange program in 2027, six years after it ditched the scheme during fractious Brexit negotiations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmja3daef00023b6pwz2h3k48@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The government said rejoining the scheme was a \u201chuge win\u201d for young Britons, and will ensure that \u201ceveryone, from every background, has the opportunity to study and train abroad.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmja3daef00033b6pxoqu8wmt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Erasmus allows students to spend a year at foreign universities while paying the same fees as their domestic peers. The agreement will also allow Prime Minister Keir Starmer to show the British public that his push to improve relations with the EU is beginning to bear fruit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmja3daef00043b6ppbfkuzby@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But this fruit has come at a price. Britain\u2019s contribution for the 2027\/28 academic year will be \u00a3570 million ($760 million). Although this fee represents a 30% discount to the default terms under the current trade deal with the EU, it is around <a href=\"https:\/\/questions-statements.parliament.uk\/written-questions\/detail\/2021-07-12\/HL1883\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">twice<\/a> what Britain paid to take part in Erasmus while it was still a member of the bloc.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmja3daef00053b6po7z941rg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The costly reintroduction of a pre-Brexit perk could raise uncomfortable questions about how and whether Britain is benefiting from its decision to leave the EU, which was taken in 2016 and implemented in 2020. Talk of Brexit remains something of a taboo in British politics \u2013 at least on the right \u2013 but recent <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/politics\/articles\/51500-few-britons-think-brexit-has-been-good-for-anything\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polls<\/a> show that public opinion towards the EU is softening, with only a fraction of Britons able to point to any benefits from leaving the bloc.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmja3daef00063b6pib7505l7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The groundwork for Wednesday\u2019s announcement was laid during a summit between British and EU leaders in May, in which both sides agreed to \u201cdeepen our people-to-people ties, particularly for the younger generation.\u201d Since coming to power last year, Starmer has stressed the need for Britain to forge closer ties with the EU, following years of antagonism during the Brexit negotiations.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1766252749_435_2025-05-19t104023z-925925148-rc2ykeae7vmw-rtrmadp-3-britain-eu.JPG\" alt=\"Prime Minister Keir Starmer took part in the UK-EU summit in London in May.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmja3daef00073b6pvj16s2h2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Erasmus program was canceled in 2020 by Boris Johnson, then the Conservative prime minister, who claimed it did not offer value for money. But Chatham House, a London-based think tank, wrote in a 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chathamhouse.org\/2021\/01\/turing-scheme-erasmus-holds-lessons-global-britain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> that: \u201cFar from acting as a drain on the economy, Erasmus has facilitated the movement of well-funded students into the UK for limited periods, during which they have provided a lucrative customer base for the higher education, services and hospitality sectors.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmja3daef00083b6pjb2rs6kf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It estimated that Britain made a net profit of \u00a3243 million ($324 million) per year from its participation in Erasmus. As well as financial benefits, a European Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/eurydice.eacea.ec.europa.eu\/news\/focus-one-million-hybrid-babies-better-transversal-skills-and-job-prospects-there-downside\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> in 2019 found that more than 1 million \u201cErasmus babies\u201d \u2013 children whose parents met while one or both was on an Erasmus exchange program \u2013 have been born since the program started in the 1980s.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmja3daef00093b6pc3dj6rzp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Irene Tracey, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Oxford, said the program also bolstered Britain\u2019s standing in the world in subtler ways.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmja3daef000a3b6p50jhbd5g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEven a brief visit to the UK \u2013 people love their time here,\u201d Tracey told the BBC. \u201cMany of these people are going to go on and become leaders of the public and private sector \u2013 or leaders of their countries \u2013 and that\u2019s a good thing. We service that swirl of global talent.
