{"id":64474,"date":"2025-05-01T02:10:17","date_gmt":"2025-05-01T02:10:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/64474\/"},"modified":"2025-05-01T02:10:17","modified_gmt":"2025-05-01T02:10:17","slug":"boy-15-had-to-walk-two-hours-to-mental-health-appointment-in-months-before-his-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/64474\/","title":{"rendered":"Boy, 15, had to walk &#8216;two hours&#8217; to mental health appointment in months before his death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Zack Ellis, 15, lived in Oldham but had to walk for hours to get to mental health appointments in Tameside<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_Zack-Ellis-Rochdale-coroners-courtjpeg.jpg\" alt=\"Zack Ellis\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Zack Ellis(Image: GoFundMe)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A teenager had to walk &#8220;two hours&#8221; to get mental health support in the months leading up to his death, a court has heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Zack Ellis, 15, tragically died on July 23, 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A pre-inquest review held at <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/rochdale\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Rochdale<\/a> Coroner&#8217;s Court today (April 30) heard that from December 2023 and in the months leading up to his death, Zack had shown &#8220;self-harming behaviour&#8221; and &#8220;suicidal ideation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The hearing heard that multiple agencies spread across Greater Manchester had been involved in Zack&#8217;s care. These included his GP in Tameside, mental health trust Pennine Care, social services in Oldham where he lived, a college he attended in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/salford\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Salford<\/a>, and specialist young people&#8217;s mental service CAMHS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">However, it also heard how Zack, who lived in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/oldham\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Oldham<\/a> with his family, was given appointments in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/tameside\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Tameside<\/a> and had to &#8216;walk two hours&#8217; to attend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Senior Coroner Joanne Kearsley told the court that the inquest will look at how the different agencies worked together on Zack&#8217;s care in the months before his death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Join the Manchester Evening News WhatsApp group <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/chat.whatsapp.com\/GY77Jy0SeCL8ZFZaNcWsVq\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"HERELink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">She told the court: &#8220;It&#8217;s not just what happened on the day that Zack died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;You&#8217;ve got a child walking two hours to a mental health appointment in Tameside, and that level of access and support for a child who is under social services to access their mental health needs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The coroner scheduled the full inquest to be held over five days between September 1 and September 5.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It will hear evidence from Zack&#8217;s GP, Pennine Care, Oldham social services, CAMS, and college UTC Media City where Zack had attended.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Following Zack&#8217;s tragic and premature death a GoFundMe was set up to help support his family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Paying tribute to Zack on the GoFundMe, his loved ones wrote: &#8220;We&#8217;re all so heartbroken especially mum, dad &amp; little brother and sisters were all going to miss him so much.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;We as a family are trying to come to terms with such a loss.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Anyone wishing to donate to Zack&#8217;s GoFundMe can do so <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/help-give-our-special-zack-the-send-off-he-so-deserves\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Senior Coroner Kearsley clarified she would be referring to the 15-year-old as Zack throughout the proceedings as, although he had been given a different name at birth, Zack was the name he had gone by.<\/p>\n<p>Helplines and websites<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Samaritans (116 123)<\/strong> <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">samaritans.org<\/strong> operates a 24-hour service available every day of the year.
