Coastguards in Ceredigion photographed the item before calling in the Army\u2019s EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) unit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">They\u2019d received a report of a suspect device found at <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailypost.co.uk\/news\/north-wales-news\/sea-rises-around-car-welsh-31805602\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Ynyslas beachLink opens in a new tab.\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Ynyslas beach<\/a> between Aberdyfi and Borth. The vast sandy beach, part of the Dyfi National Nature Reserve, flies no-swimming red flags because of its dangerous currents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It lies close to a former \u201ctop secret\u201d military base set up towards the end of World War Two. Ynyslas was selected by the Air Ministry as a missile-testing site when the Germans began developing long-range rockets with guidance systems \u2013 the V1 and the V2.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Ynyslas Range provided special test facilities for Britain\u2019s response \u2013 rockets propelled by liquid fuels such as liquid oxygen and petrol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Test firings were conducted from concrete bases near the shore car park. A lack of firing space mean the site was closed shortly after in 1946.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Due to the amount of unexploded ordnance left behind, the site\u2019s legacy continues to this day. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The latest drama began on Wednesday, December 17, when HM Coastguard teams from Borth and Aberystwyth were called to the data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">After their photos were studied by the EOD team, all parties returned to the beach the following day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cOnce the item was no longer covered by the tide, we provided a safety cordon on the beach so EOD could detonate the item,\u201d said a Coastguard representative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A video of the explosion showed a Coastguard officer appearing to stand perilously close to the explosion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A team spokesperson explained: \u201cThe officer seen behind the explosion is at least 100 metres away from it, the photograph just makes him look closer!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Urging people not to pick up suspected ordnance from the beach, Coastguards said old military items were often found nearby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Instead, beachgoers should call 999, ask for Coastguard and give a precise location of
