The European Union and the London government have reached an agreement to reinstate <strong>the Erasmus+ scheme<\/strong> between Europe and the UK. Students on opposite sides of the Channel will thus be able to return to <strong>attend universities without paying additional fees from 2027<\/strong>. \u201cThe association of the UK with the Erasmus+ programme in 2027 would offer <strong>significant opportunities in the fields of education, training, sport, and youth<\/strong> for individuals in the UK and the European Union, in particular for the younger generation,\u201d the authorities in Brussels and London jointly announced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">The decision is an important step for\u00a0the<strong>\u00a0restoration<\/strong><strong>\u00a0of post-Brexit<\/strong> relations between the 27-member club and the London government. Signs to this effect had already been seen with the signing, in 2023, of the <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/strategy-and-policy\/relations-united-kingdom\/eu-uk-withdrawal-agreement\/windsor-framework_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>agreement on the movement of goods in Northern Ireland<\/b><\/a>.\u00a0A similar operation, also in 2023, with the UK\u2019s access to part of the research funds allocated by the Commission\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu\/strategy\/strategy-research-and-innovation\/europe-world\/international-cooperation\/association-horizon-europe\/united-kingdom_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Horizon Europe<\/a><strong\/> plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">At an operational level, it must be remembered that the Erasmus project benefits not only students but also facilitates the mobility of <strong>educational professionals, trainees, and volunteers.<\/strong> The advantage is that British people can access British universities and Europeans British ones at no extra cost by obtaining <strong>an EU- and UK-funded scholarship<\/strong>. The last time the UK was part of the scheme was 2020, with an <strong>interchange of some 50,000 people.<\/strong> Five years ago, more than <strong>17,000<\/strong> <strong>British<\/strong> trainees and students had joined the programme. Europeans, on the other hand, numbered <strong>30,000. <\/strong> Numbers that could be repeated, as the availability provided\u00a0by the new agreement will allow <strong>easier mobilisation for 100,000 people<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"my-2 [&amp;+p]:mt-4 [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:inline-block [&amp;_strong:has(+br)]:pb-2\">In 2024, among the 27 Member States, about\u00a0<strong style=\"text-align: inherit\">1.5 million<\/strong>\u00a0people joined Erasmus.\u00a0There is no shortage of criticism, however, branding the initiative as elitist. In fact, despite the large numbers and a promise to increase\u00a0contributions, amounting to <strong>\u20ac5<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>billion to date<\/strong>, mobility is guaranteed only\u00a0to <strong>a small part\u00a0of the population.<\/strong> Applying a simplification and assuming there are approximately 64 million young Europeans aged 18 to 30, a comparison with the Erasmus numbers for 2024 shows that <strong>only 2.3% of the population has benefited from Erasmus mobility.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>English version by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withub.it\/en\/translate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Translation Service of Withub<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Brussels \u2013 Brexit, yes, but not for students.
