{"id":64503,"date":"2025-05-01T02:25:08","date_gmt":"2025-05-01T02:25:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/64503\/"},"modified":"2025-05-01T02:25:08","modified_gmt":"2025-05-01T02:25:08","slug":"britains-ukraine-strategy-is-about-to-be-tested-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/64503\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain\u2019s Ukraine strategy is about to be tested \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>British Foreign Secretary David Lammy disclosed Wednesday he has spoken to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio 13 times this year, with Starmer and Trump speaking \u201calmost\u201d as many times.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the scenes on the U.K. side, National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/jonathan-powell-tony-blair-chief-of-staff-war-in-ukraine-keir-starmer-national-security-adviser\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seasoned negotiator<\/a>, and Defense Secretary John Healey, seen as another heavyweight, have been key to this drive, aided by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/mark-burnett-from-trumps-apprentice-boss-to-high-powered-british-fixer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. envoy to the U.K. Mark Burnett<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As one British official reflected after the meeting in Rome: \u201cWe were happy that we were able to continue to underline that Putin has shown no sign of any intention to commit to peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/12863109-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6544227\"  \/>The U.S. president\u2019s change of tack follows months of careful coordination by Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron. | Pool Photo by Maxppp via EPA<\/p>\n<p>A French official chimed in that \u201cfor the moment, Trump has understood\u201d Putin can\u2019t be trusted. They added: \u201cIt\u2019s something that the president [Macron] repeatedly says, and tries to get through to Trump.
