You can’t call it a season-long race and have it come down to one tournament.”

“Hypothetically, we get to East Lake, and my neck flares up, and it doesn’t heal the way it did at The Players; I finish 30th in the FedExCup because I had to withdraw from the last tournament. No. It is what it is.”

After revealing his dislike of the format it seems like Scheffler isn’t the only golfer hoping for change.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.europesays.com/uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/GettyImages-2165253519-1024x683.jpg" alt="Photo by Kevin C. It might be impossible to change everything this year because we can’t change points and this, that and the other so hopefully this year will be a bridge to next year.”

Updates on revamped Tour Championship, via @golfweek:

• No more starting strokes
• New format won’t be match play/bracket-style
• Players reached consensus on new format at last week’s PAC meeting
• 2025 will be bridge year for changes

— Underdog Golf (@UnderdogGolf) April 25, 2025

View Tweet

Masters winner Rory McIlroy currently sits comfortably top of the FedEx Cup rankings, with the rest of the field a way behind, including Scheffler, who sits in fourth.

What the new FedEx Cup could look like

The current format uses a handicap system, where the leading player in the rankings starts ten underpar, with a dwindling advantage as players move down the rankings.

It turns out that this format is wildly unpopular amongst the pros, with players such as Adam Scott and Sam Burns both having voiced their concerns over the format, branding it as ‘gimmicky’ and ‘confusing’.

This setup appears to be getting thrown out, though; it is currently unclear as to what the new format will look like. However, former board member Kevin Kisner has revealed he is hoping for a knockout-style layout.

“I like the one that TV is pushing. There would be a cut to the Round of 16 on Friday, eight play Saturday, top four duke it out on Sunday and five to eight play for their [final] position,” Kisner told Schupak.

“I’m biased. I like whatever TV likes. They’re our biggest money partner and I like playing for a lot of money.

“That was one of the ideas. I don’t know if that is still the direction. I think it will be a more traditional tournament with more consequence.
