Donald Trump\u2019s<\/a> director of national intelligence has split with Europe<\/a> and Nato<\/a> by suggesting Vladimir Putin <\/a>does not have the capability to conquer Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Russian president sent his troops into the neighbouring country in February 2022 in a clear land grab, even trying \u2013 and failing \u2013 to overrun its capital Kyiv.<\/p>\n

He has falsely alleged Ukraine needed to be \u201cde-Nazified\u201d and claimed that Russia had been pushed to invade over fears of Nato\u2019s eastward expansion.<\/p>\n

Almost four years later, Putin now holds approximately a fifth of Ukraine\u2019s sovereign land \u2013 and continues to push for more on the frontline.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s administration is currently trying to secure a peace deal to end the war by any means necessary, even if it involves rewarding Russia for its aggression by recognised its illegal occupation.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, European allies are desperately trying to negotiate a proposal which would retain Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty and prevent Putin from pushing further into the continent \u2013 without causing upset with the White House by implementing further more delays to the peace process.<\/p>\n

But Trump\u2019s director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, alarmingly questioned long-standing fears that Moscow is threatening the whole of Europe.<\/p>\n

In a post on X, <\/a>she said: \u201cDeep State warmongers and their Propaganda Media are again trying to undermine President Trump\u2019s efforts to bring peace to Ukraine \u2013 and indeed Europe \u2013 by falsely claiming that the \u2018US intelligence community\u2019 agrees to and supports EU\/NATO viewpoint that Russia\u2019s aim is to invade\/conquer Europe (in order to gin up support for their pro-war policies).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe truth is that \u2018US intelligence\u2019 assesses that Russia does not even have the capability to conquer and occupy Ukraine, what to speak of \u2018invading and occupying\u2019 Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her comments are in line with other Trump officials who have insisted Putin wants peace via diplomatic means.<\/p>\n

However, news agency Reuters<\/a> cited six sources close to US intelligence which said many analysts have warned the White House that Putin intends to capture all of Ukraine and reclaim other territories formerly held by the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n

A member of the House Intelligence Committee, Democratic representative Mike Quigley, said<\/a>: \u201cThe intelligence has always been that Putin wants more. The Europeans are convinced of it. The Poles are absolutely convinced of it. The Baltics think they\u2019re first.\u201d<\/p>\n

European leaders have repeatedly warned that Putin has more expansionist ambitions.<\/p>\n

Polish prime minister Donald Tusk said<\/a> this week that Ukraine needs more funds from Europe because the continent will pay in \u201cmoney today, blood tomorrow\u201d.<\/p>\n
