He is a computer science professor at the Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al, a Turing Award winner, and one of the most-cited scientists in the world on <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/alphabet\/\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/alphabet\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Google<\/a> Scholar\u2014and now he\u2019s turned his back on his life\u2019s work to warn that your job is probably already under threat.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Desk jobs, or as Bengio called them, \u201ccognitive jobs, the jobs that you can do behind a keyboard,\u201d will be the first casualties of automation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just a matter of time,\u201d the AI pioneer stressed on Steven Bartlett\u2019s <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zQ1POHiR8m8\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zQ1POHiR8m8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diary of a CEO<\/a> podcast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnless we hit a wall scientifically, like some obstacle prevents us from making progress to make AIs smarter and smarter, there\u2019s going to be a time when they\u2019ll be doing more and more, able to do more and more of the work that people do \u2026 And then, of course, it takes years for companies to really integrate that into their workflows, but they\u2019re eager to do it. So it\u2019s more a matter of time than, is it happening or not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And he admitted that it\u2019s <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/09\/02\/ceos-putting-a-pause-on-hiring-first-timers-entr-level-gen-z-job-warning-career-coach-fortune-500-warns\/\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/09\/02\/ceos-putting-a-pause-on-hiring-first-timers-entr-level-gen-z-job-warning-career-coach-fortune-500-warns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gen Z new-hires<\/a> who are currently being hit hardest by AI, as junior roles are the easiest to cut, consolidate, or backfill with software\u2014but eventually everyone\u2019s jobs will be impacted within five years.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just office jobs that are at risk; even trade jobs and democracy itself are threatened\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For years, degrees were pushed as the key to success for the young and aspirational looking to nab well-paying and stable jobs. But now, even highly educated students are finding themselves \u201c<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/07\/03\/neets-perfect-storm-highly-trained-workers-new-unemployables-korn-ferry\/\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/07\/03\/neets-perfect-storm-highly-trained-workers-new-unemployables-korn-ferry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unemployable<\/a>\u201d as employers launch a \u201cwait-and-watch strategy\u201d in the midst of AI. Graduates in the U.K. are facing the <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2025\/jun\/25\/uk-university-graduates-toughest-job-market-rise-of-ai\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2025\/jun\/25\/uk-university-graduates-toughest-job-market-rise-of-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">worst job market<\/a> since 2018. And companies like <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/25\/intel-layoffs-ceo-staff-memo-stock-price\/\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/25\/intel-layoffs-ceo-staff-memo-stock-price\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Intel<\/a>, <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/ibm\/\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/ibm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IBM<\/a>, and <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/16\/tech-layoffs-2025-how-microsoft-google-meta-amazon\/\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/07\/16\/tech-layoffs-2025-how-microsoft-google-meta-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google<\/a> have been freezing thousands of would-be new roles that AI is expected to take over in the next five years.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not just a blip or a reflection of the current economy, Bengio warned. As more firms lean on AI and eventually robots, too, the technology will only get smarter, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs companies are deploying more and more robots, they will be collecting more and more data. So eventually, it\u2019s going to happen,\u201d Bengio said when asked whether AI will be able to wipe out all work. Even young people trying to outsmart automation by ditching degrees or upskilling into <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/08\/05\/gen-z-ditching-college-trade-jobs-office-admin-safest-bet-non-grads\/\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/08\/05\/gen-z-ditching-college-trade-jobs-office-admin-safest-bet-non-grads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trade jobs<\/a> are destined for the same dead end.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo if you do a physical job\u2014as <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/12\/04\/godfather-of-ai-geoffrey-hinton-massive-unemployment-warning-thanks-to-big-tech-replacing-workers-with-ai-senator-bernie-sanders-bill-gates-elon-musk-predictions-probably-right\/\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/12\/04\/godfather-of-ai-geoffrey-hinton-massive-unemployment-warning-thanks-to-big-tech-replacing-workers-with-ai-senator-bernie-sanders-bill-gates-elon-musk-predictions-probably-right\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Geoffrey Hinton<\/a> is often saying, you should be a plumber or something\u2014it\u2019s going to take more time [for AI to replace your job], but I think it\u2019s only a temporary thing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, knowing the devastation AI could cause, Bengio said he regrets his life\u2019s work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have seen this coming much earlier, but I didn\u2019t pay much attention to the potentially catastrophic risks,\u201d the 61-year-old admitted. \u201cBut my turning point was when ChatGPT came, and also with my grandson, I realized that it wasn\u2019t clear if he would have a life 20 years from now, because we\u2019re starting to see AI systems that are resisting being shut down.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s since founded LawZero, a nonprofit organization focused on building safe and human-aligned AI systems. But at the current rate of change, his warning is clear: It\u2019s not just jobs, even democracy could collapse in as little as two decades.<\/p>\n<p>His message for CEOs? \u201cStep back from your work. Talk to each other, and let\u2019s see if together, we can solve the problem.
