Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet<\/a> has revealed how cruel taunts from classmates, and even teachers, drove her into developing a serious health issue. She said that because she wasn\u2019t as slim as some of the other girl in her acting class she had been poorly treated by drama school staff, which sparked an eating disorder<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She explained on BBC<\/a> Radio 4\u2019s Desert Island Discs<\/a>: \u201cI really remem\u00adber vividly a drama teacher who many people have wrongly assumed was a man \u2013 it was actu\u00adally a woman \u2013 and she said to me, \u2018Well darling, you\u2019ll have a career if you\u2019re happy to settle for the fat girl parts\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added that she was \u201con and off diets from the age of 15 to 19.\u201d Eventually, Kate said she was hardly eating at all: “It was really unhealthy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Kate told the show\u2019s host, Lauren Laverne<\/a>: \u201cIt\u2019s the only thing in my life I really regret because you know, long-term, not eat\u00ading prop\u00aderly or eat\u00ading and pan\u00adick\u00ading about what you\u2019d eaten or wak\u00ading up in the morn\u00ading and the first thing I\u2019d think about is, \u2018Oh my God, do I look fat\u00adter, do I look fat\u00adter?\u2019 That went on for a really long time.\u201d<\/p>\n

She had a powerful message for her former classmates: “You lot who were in my year at school, you were bloody hor\u00adrible to me, and you should be ashamed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kate recalled that the bullying dated back to her primary school days: \u201cI had a lot of kids tease me at primary school. They would call me \u2018Blub\u00adber\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t even over\u00adweight. I just had stocky thighs, and they would lock me in the art cup\u00adboard, and they would say, \u2018Blub\u00adber\u2019s blub\u00adbing in the art cup\u00adboard\u2019 and things like that.\u2019<\/p>\n

The multi-BAFTA award-winner recalled how, after she won her first starring r\u00f4le at the age of 15, the other girls at her school became even more envious of her talent: \u201cThey hated me then. I remem\u00adber going back to school and they had pushed my desk into a corner and moved their desks to the other side of the room.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said she learned to have \u201ca pretty thick skin\u201d and threw herself into her drama studies: “The school mean people became as insig\u00adni\u00adfic\u00adant as I could pos\u00adsibly make them,\u201d Kate explained. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t let them spoil a tra\u00adject\u00adory that I was determ\u00adined I was on.\u201d<\/p>\n

The trajectory that Kate was on has led her to become one of the most respected and admired actresses of her generation. The 50-year-old star\u2019s impressive range has taken in the irrepressible Rose in Titanic, teenage murderess Juliet Hulme in Heavenly Creatures and a former Nazi camp guard in The Reader \u2013 the r\u00f4le for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2008.<\/p>\n

This year she made her directorial debut with the Netflix<\/a> drama film Goodbye June, which she also produced and starred in.<\/p>\n
