But Ornstein dropped another Sunday bomb to reveal that that is unlikely to be the case.

Liverpool unlikely to sign Antoine Semenyo

Semenyo has been heavily linked with a January move to Liverpool and the presence of a £65m release clause in his contract makes him very much attainable.

However, while speaking to NBC Sports ahead of Aston Villa’s clash with Manchester United on Sunday, Ornstein revealed that Liverpool are not currently anywhere near the front of the chase for Semenyo.

READ MORE: Liverpool ready to challenge Man United for £52m ‘generational talent’ who could solve a big issue

“This is going to be one of the biggest stories of the January transfer window and I would suspect it will be resolved sooner rather than later,” said the journalist. “If he is going to move it would need to be in the early part of the window.

“Everything I’ve learned suggests that a transfer is highly possible and the names that are emerging as the leading contenders right now are Manchester City and Manchester United – in no particular order, they’re both extremely fond of him.

“Liverpool are said to have had great admiration for him, but they haven’t moved to the same extent so far to my knowledge, but let’s see if anything changes around the Alexander Isak injury. Use the comment button on the bottom left to have your say

Will Liverpool make an attacking signing anyway?

Although many supporters will be disappointed, this is good news. Semenyo has never been good enough for Liverpool and the furore to bring him to Anfield has been bizarre.

There are plenty of better options out there for the Reds, and it will be fascinating to see if they do decide to pull the trigger on one.

What we know for sure is that Liverpool will not make a signing for the sake of it. With the season already something of a write off, they won’t buy a player they do not have a long-term vision for.

Given Arne Slot now has only one central striker, it could be that Liverpool pivot towards a more out-and-out No. 9. Midtjylland’s Franculino Dju has been linked and he could be one to watch.

Alternatively, a versatile wide man such as Anthony Gordon may come back into the thinking. The Newcastle winger is more attainable than previously and Liverpool have been keen on him in the past.

 Join Our Newsletter

Receive a digest of our best Liverpool content each week direct to your mailbox

Liverpool supporters are reeling from the news that Alexander Isak is facing months on the sidelines after breaking…

[8815
9261,16239,748,10305,393,4884,179,16,15
0":"post-647856","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-liverpool","8":"tag-alexander-isak","9":"tag-antoine-semenyo","10":"tag-britain","11":"tag-david-ornstein","12":"tag-england","13":"tag-great-britain","14":"tag-liverpool","15":"tag-uk","16":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
