Liverpool supporters are reeling from the news that Alexander Isak is facing months on the sidelines after breaking his leg against Tottenham.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fans were left fearing the worst after seeing the Swede hobble off immediately after opening the scoring on Saturday night.<\/p>\n

And while worries over a serious knee injury have been allayed, journalist David Ornstein<\/a> broke the news on Sunday that Liverpool<\/a> are expecting a lower leg fracture for Isak<\/a>.<\/p>\n

With Liverpool already light in attack, many have been wondering whether Isak\u2019s injury could force the Reds into a move for reported target Antoine Semenyo<\/a>. But Ornstein dropped another Sunday bomb to reveal that that is unlikely to be the case.<\/p>\n

Liverpool unlikely to sign Antoine Semenyo<\/p>\n

Semenyo has been heavily linked with a January move to Liverpool<\/a> and the presence of a \u00a365m release clause in his contract makes him very much attainable.<\/p>\n

However, while speaking to NBC Sports<\/a> ahead of Aston Villa\u2019s clash with Manchester United on Sunday, Ornstein revealed that Liverpool are not currently anywhere near the front of the chase for Semenyo.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is going to be one of the biggest stories of the January transfer window and I would suspect it will be resolved sooner rather than later,\u201d said the journalist. \u201cIf he is going to move it would need to be in the early part of the window.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything I\u2019ve learned suggests that a transfer is highly possible and the names that are emerging as the leading contenders right now are Manchester City and Manchester United \u2013 in no particular order, they\u2019re both extremely fond of him. <\/p>\n

\u201cLiverpool are said to have had great admiration for him, but they haven\u2019t moved to the same extent so far to my knowledge, but let\u2019s see if anything changes around the Alexander Isak injury. Tottenham Hotspur were very keen and I\u2019m led to believe were prepared to pay a significant salary to Antoine Semenyo, but he politely is focusing on other options, namely it seems City or United.\u201d<\/p>\n

Will Liverpool make an attacking signing anyway?<\/p>\n

Although many supporters will be disappointed, this is good news. Semenyo has never been good enough for Liverpool<\/a> and the furore to bring him to Anfield<\/a> has been bizarre.<\/p>\n

There are plenty of better options out there for the Reds, and it will be fascinating to see if they do decide to pull the trigger on one.<\/p>\n

What we know for sure is that Liverpool will not make a signing for the sake of it. With the season already something of a write off, they won\u2019t buy a player they do not have a long-term vision for.<\/p>\n

Given Arne Slot now has only one central striker, it could be that Liverpool pivot towards a more out-and-out No. 9. Midtjylland\u2019s Franculino Dju has been linked<\/a> and he could be one to watch.<\/p>\n

Alternatively, a versatile wide man such as Anthony Gordon may come back into the thinking. The Newcastle winger is more attainable than previously and Liverpool have been keen on him in the past. <\/p>\n
