{"id":64826,"date":"2025-05-01T05:14:09","date_gmt":"2025-05-01T05:14:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/64826\/"},"modified":"2025-05-01T05:14:09","modified_gmt":"2025-05-01T05:14:09","slug":"west-midlands-hs2-station-plans-recommended-for-approval","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/64826\/","title":{"rendered":"West Midlands HS2 station plans recommended for approval"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Those behind the proposals for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hs2.org.uk\/building-hs2\/stations\/curzon-street\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Curzon Street Station<\/a>, the city centre terminus of the controversial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hs2.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HS2 line<\/a>, previously said the design changes would help to \u201cfuture proof\u201d the station.<\/p>\n<p>They include a change in material from timber to aluminium within the station roof due to recently tightened fire standards while the eastern concourse has also been replanned.<\/p>\n<p>Construction work on the station began in January last year amid hope it would provide a huge economic boost and serve as a symbol of the city\u2019s ambition<\/p>\n<p>But as \u201cserious challenges\u201d continue to plague the HS2 project, the new CEO recently confirmed that a \u201creset of the programme\u201d will take place and involve a review of the project\u2019s cost and schedule.<\/p>\n<p>Despite uncertainty over when exactly the first trains will run between<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expressandstar.com\/news\/local-hubs\/birmingham\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Birmingham<\/a> and London, progress is being made on the design of Curzon Street Station.<\/p>\n<p>Consent for the station, based on an outline scheme design, was secured in 2020 from Birmingham City Council.<\/p>\n<p>HS2\u2019s construction partner Mace Dragados Joint Venture would later reveal proposed design \u201crefinements\u201d last year in September before submitting a planning application.<\/p>\n<p>A council officer\u2019s report, published ahead of a planning committee meeting next week, has now recommended the redesign for approval.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/cd50be55-5654-407a-8471-d65d24f5fbb3.jpg\"   alt=\"A visualisation of the proposed revised design for Curzon Street Station, the HS2 station in Birmingham. Taken from HS2 press release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am satisfied that the revised design and subsequent external appearance of the proposed station building would still be a world class 21st century landmark building,\u201d it read.<\/p>\n<p>It went on to say that the station would display \u201chigh quality architecture and provide a world class passenger experience\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is considered that the impact on the local amenity, heritage assets and surrounding highways would not be any more significant than what was envisaged in 2020,\u201d the report continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost importantly, the station would contribute to maximising the regeneration and development potential of HS2 in the city centre.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe HS2 development will help to create more jobs and deliver new homes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also said a combination of factors were involved within the redesign, including value for money, technical complexities, engineering constraints and changes to standards and regulations.<\/p>\n<p>On the HS2 reset, CEO Mark Wild said recently: \u201cThis is of a scale never done before \u2013 the last mainline terminus we built was 1899 in Marylebone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTruth is also the construction has been harder than we would have thought so we\u2019ve lost ground in construction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo a combination of factors of getting a little bit behind and also the complexity to come means we need to reset the programme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe good news is that this is all completely solvable and I\u2019m very, very confident,\u201d he added. \u201cBut you get one chance to reset it to give people confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The HS2 Curzon Street Station plans will be considered by the council\u2019s planning committee on Thursday, May 8.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Those behind the proposals for Curzon Street Station, the city centre terminus of the controversial HS2 line, previously&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":64827,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7820],"tags":[855,748,393,4884,8823,379,12,1263,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-64826","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-birmingham","8":"tag-birmingham","9":"tag-britain","10":"tag-england","11":"tag-great-britain","12":"tag-ldrs","13":"tag-local-hubs","14":"tag-news","15":"tag-transport","16":"tag-uk","17":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/114430873652557927","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/64826","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=64826"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/64826\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/64827"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=64826"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=64826"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=64826"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
