LBC<\/a> presenter Lewis Goodall <\/a>tore into a Tory<\/a> frontbencher after he tried to defend the Conservatives\u2019<\/a> legacy with Brexit<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As the British economy<\/a> continues to flounder, the prospect of joining a customs union <\/a>with the EU has started to look more appeal for some.<\/p>\n

Even deputy prime minister David Lammy<\/a> and health secretary Wes Streeting<\/a> have voiced support for the idea, even though Labour\u2019s<\/a> election manifesto rules out a return to the EU\u2019s customs union or the single market.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the House of Commons also backed<\/a> a Liberal Democrat bill calling for a return of the trading arrangement which ended after Brexit<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Tories argue that this would undo their exit deal.<\/p>\n

However, presenter Goodall unpacked the extensive damage Brexit had done to the UK when interviewing deputy Tory chairman Matt Vickers<\/a> on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Goodall said: \u201cEconomists from Stanford University, the Bank of England, King\u2019s College London, and the German Central Bank and the University of Nottingham say that the signature achievement of your last government \u2013 Brexit \u2013 has cost every single man, woman and child in this country \u00a33,000 in terms of lost economic growth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vickers replied: \u201cWell, we heard that the sky was going to fall down when Brexit occurred \u2013\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re all just woke, are they? America\u2019s National Bureau of Economic Research, what skin in the game have they got?\u201d Goodall said.<\/p>\n

Vickers hit back: \u201cThis publication I\u2019ve never heard of \u2013\u201d<\/p>\n

Goodall said: \u201cHave you heard of the Bank of England?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore the general election, we had the fastest growing economy in the G7. We\u2019ve now got the slowest growth in the G7,\u201d the Tory MP said. \u201cWe had near record levels of unemployment \u2013\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you saying Brexit has been good for this country economically?\u201d Goodall cut in.<\/p>\n

Vickers replied: \u201cI think it\u2019s created opportunities. We\u2019ve got out there, we set out trade agreements \u2013\u201d <\/p>\n

But the presenter said: \u201cYou\u2019re there having a go at Rachel Reeves for increased bureaucracy, of friction for business, for making life difficult for business. Have you ever tried driving a small business exporting to Europe these days?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I take you out of Westminster? You can come up north where we\u2019ve created jobs,\u201d Vickers offered.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m talking about our exporters, small businesses, people trying to send goods to Europe, Goodall pointed out. \u201cIt is so much harder than it used to be because of your government.\u201d<\/p>\n
