{"id":649731,"date":"2025-12-23T05:12:41","date_gmt":"2025-12-23T05:12:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/649731\/"},"modified":"2025-12-23T05:12:41","modified_gmt":"2025-12-23T05:12:41","slug":"green-fingered-charles-admits-hands-on-approach-causes-accidents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/649731\/","title":{"rendered":"Green-fingered Charles admits hands-on approach causes accidents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The King\u2019s intricate gardens at Dumfries House and Sandringham have been designed as places of peace and tranquillity for visitors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">It seems, however, that every now and then the serenity may well be punctuated with an outburst from a secateur-wielding monarch, as Charles admits: \u201cI do cut bits of my fingers off occasionally\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">In a programme recorded for Radio 4, the King talks about his hands-on approach to gardening and how his passion for topiary was influenced by his grandmother, the Queen Mother, and great-great-grandmother, Queen Alexandra.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"King Charles III in a pinstripe suit, holding a walking stick, stands among various plants and dark red flowers at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/\/14eb278c-6e65-47b3-a462-cfc61020fc90.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>TOBY MELVILLE\/AFP\/GETTY IMAGES<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The King said that his introduction to gardening began when he was \u201cwheeled\u201d around in his pram through the dairy garden at Sandringham where Queen Alexandra, consort of Edward VII, had planted yew trees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">That inspired Charles to recreate a topiary garden in her name at Sandringham, where Edward VII at one time employed more than 100 gardeners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Speaking to the BBC presenter Martha Kearney for an episode of Radio 4\u2019s This Natural Life, the King said: \u201cI have very extraordinary memories of my great-great-grandmother, Queen Alexandra\u2019s wonderful little topiary garden at Sandringham.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cThat really fascinated me as a very small child and I\u2019ve had this passion for topiary ever since.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Prince Charles with a bandage over his left eye.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/\/c4cebeda-4408-454d-983f-71bad4cb0a08.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Charles was said to have caused an injury to his eye in 2001 while gardening<\/p>\n<p>MAX MUMBY\/INDIGO\/GETTY<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cBut also I remember my grandmother\u2019s garden at Windsor. That had huge associations for me, and I was always able to potter about there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cI think I was just one of those people who generally responded to being outside and looking and observing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">As a young prince, Charles had a close relationship with this maternal grandmother, the Queen Mother, spending time with her at Royal Lodge, her home on the Windsor estate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Within the grounds, Charles would help in the garden and play in the \u201cLittle house\u201d, a Wendy house that was a gift to his mother, the late Queen, when she was a young princess from the people of Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/media\/article\/kings-grand-design-for-dumfries-house-was-appalling-risk-fh79xktg8\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>King Charles\u2019s grand design for Dumfries House was \u2018appalling risk\u2019<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">When Kearney asked whether Charles, as a grandfather himself, pointed out things of interest to his own grandchildren, he laughed and replied: \u201cI try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"King Charles III planting a tree with a shovel while a man holds a wheelbarrow.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/\/397554f4-d96d-4854-b5b8-f3782d81a40f.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>VICTORIA JONES\/GETTY IMAGES<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Speaking about his interest in gardening, he said: \u201cWell, I\u2019m afraid I do rather enjoy trying to make the environment even more interesting with subtle intervention. I spend my life going round with my secateurs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">In the programme, which will be broadcast on Radio 4 on December 23 and repeated on Christmas Day, the monarch went on to speak more broadly about children\u2019s education when it came to food production, saying that it was a \u201ctragedy\u201d that there are no longer school farms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">He said: \u201cWe are what we eat in so many ways. Even allotments are only now beginning to come back in fashion after being abandoned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">He added: \u201cI remember there used to be many more school farms, and nearly all of them have been shut down or sold off, which is a tragedy, because in fact, there were marvellous ways for people to learn biology or economics or goodness knows what else, because of actually looking after animals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/royal-family\/article\/king-charles-sandringham-former-prince-andrew-rdhckw5jf\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>King Charles designs new gardens at Sandringham \u2014 ahead of Andrew\u2019s move<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Charles did say, however, that there was hope for the future when it came to humans\u2019 impact on the environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">He said: \u201cFor instance, in the marine environment, there are horrors being perpetrated all the time. But just for something like bottom trawling, which does untold damage to the marine environment, if you stop it, then even in two or three years, it can come back. They prove that. So there is hope if we are sensible about how we are using these resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The King will release an Amazon Prime documentary in early 2026 that sets out his view of how humans can live in harmony with nature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">With footage taken across the King\u2019s estates including at his gardens at Dumfries House in Ayrshire and at Highgrove, it is expected to showcase his work to champion environmental concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The new Radio 4 programme features the site at Dumfries House, which has a pig farm and where the King\u2019s Foundation hosts educational visits for schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">When Kearney told the King that she had tried \u201ccompanion planting\u201d, by placing \u201cmarigolds next to my carrots to try and keep away carrot flies,\u201d he replied: \u201cIt probably works\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"King Charles III smiling at the Sandringham Flower Show.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/\/eefd62b3-48eb-4623-b228-d8924f722a1e.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Speaking afterwards, she said: \u201cIt was great to see the King so relaxed in a place which means so much to him and where he puts his philosophy of nature into practice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Kristina Murrin, chief executive of The King\u2019s Foundation, said: \u201cThe King has had a profound impact on the Dumfries House estate since saving it for the nation in 2007.
