But Manchester council says that was always the plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The new bike lanes were supposed to be in place on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/oldham\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Oldham<\/a> Road in Ancoats by April but were only finished in late November. A council spokesperson put that down to \u2018issues with materials being sourced\u2019 and \u2018some delays around essential utilities work\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Crews then moved onto <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/rochdale\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Rochdale<\/a> Road in December, although the council declined to say if they were late starting that element of work due to the Oldham Road woes. However, a spokesperson said both the Oldham Road and Rochdale Road cycle lanes will be finished in green colouring in March 2026, meaning contractors will excavate the Oldham Road route only three months after it was laid down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It\u2019s the latest twist in what local resident Christine Keener called an \u2018insane\u2019 saga that also featured an <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/investigation-launched-after-claims-workmen-31565789\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">investigation into contractors\u2019 behaviour<\/a>, overnight drilling, and \u2018murdered\u2019 <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/ive-been-here-43-years-32424280\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">business.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Now crews are working on Rochdale Road around the Marble Arch pub which is being \u2018shaken\u2019 by the noise, putting customers off, according to bar manager Becky Holden.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0_WhatsApp-Image-2025-12-22-at-163827-2jpeg.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>(Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe have had to close early a couple of times with the JCB going, it literally shakes the pub and it drives customers out,\u201d the 23-year-old said. \u201cThey have worked at night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The closure of a bus stop directly outside the boozer also \u2018has driven away older customers\u2019, Becky went on: \u201cThe next-nearest [stop] is Shudehill but it\u2019s too far for the older ones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cTaxis will not stop out here because it\u2019s a one-way street. If they ring taxis, they will have to drop older customers off at the bottom. It\u2019s a steep hill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0_WhatsApp-Image-2025-12-22-at-163827-3jpeg.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>(Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Although Becky did say the usual <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/christmas\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Christmas<\/a> spike in trade was lessening the impact, other firms are counting the cost for the work. Next door, a luggage storage shop \u2018temporarily closed\u2019 due to the roadworks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">On Oldham Road, nine shops on a parade of 12 were closed on Monday (December 22). One shuttered barbers\u2019 was Kutters, whose owner, Jimmy Kennedy, said the roadworks forced his early retirement in September, bringing his 43-year-stay on Oldham Road to a close.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m getting older, I was going to go until next year but I cannot fight this. I will lose the battle,\u201d the 67-year-old told the Local Democracy Reporting Service three weeks before closing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m doing nothing here, there\u2019s no passing trade. Clients are moaning there\u2019s no public transport because there\u2019s no bus stop open here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">But the project won\u2019t be finished for another few months until contractors go back and tear up the already-laid lanes in spring, Manchester council has confirmed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0_WhatsApp-Image-2025-12-22-at-163827-1jpeg.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>(Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A spokesperson said: \u201cThe majority of the cycleway has been laid in black tarmac so that they can be safely used as the rest of the scheme is delivered. This has been the most cost-effective method of ensuring that it can remain operational, pending the completion of the entire scheme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe green surfacing has always been planned for the final stage of this project, being applied at crossing points, so that a consistent finish can be achieved across the entire stretch of cycle lane. It was not done earlier as this could have necessitated patching, resulting in an uneven and non-uniform finish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe final surfacing will only be at key points and will result in considerably less disruption compared to earlier works in this scheme. However we\u2019re grateful for the continued patience of residents and businesses in the surrounding area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The latest development has been called \u2018unacceptable\u2019 by local councillors Chris Northwood and Alan Good. In a joint statement, the Ancoats <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/liberal-democrats\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Lib Dems<\/a> said: \u201cIt\u2019s simply unacceptable that the works have been delayed for months on end and that bits of the scheme are having to be re-done as part of the scheme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cResidents should not have to put up with endless overnight disruption and we need answers why it\u2019s taken so long.
