(Image: Copyright Unknown)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Oldham council have rejected an \u2018ironic\u2019 application to build a storage site for green energy on \u2018crucial\u2019 greenbelt land.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Battery firm Root Power applied to build a \u2018critical\u2019 battery system on a field near Medlock Road, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/failsworth-and-hollinwood\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Failsworth<\/a>, next to Medlock Fishing Club. But the application sparked dismay among local residents and anglers, who claimed the site would \u2018ruin the tranquil environment of the nearby fishery and spoil greenbelt land\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Discussing the application at a planning meeting last week, councillors decided the application was \u2018unsuitable\u2019 for the location.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Coun Peter Davis said: \u201cAfter claiming we\u2019re protecting green belt land through Places for Everyone, I can\u2019t bring myself to vote for a development on greenbelt land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_Map-Of-Battery-Storage-Failsworth-Land.jpg\" alt=\"The plot of land considered for the site of a battery storage facility. \" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The plot of land considered for the site of a battery storage facility. (Image: Planning documents courtesy of Oldham Council)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">And councillor Dave Murphy added: \u201cThere\u2019s definitely an irony here, that the environmental benefits involve destroying the greenbelt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Root Power claimed the development would be \u2018critical\u2019 for Greater Manchester\u2019s green energy transition. Joe Bennett, the firm\u2019s representative, explained how the development would store surplus solar energy so it can be fed into the electricity grid later when there\u2019s higher demand. The system would help provide electricity for thousands of homes, Bennett claimed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The representative said: \u201cThis application provides an exciting opportunity for <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/oldham\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Oldham<\/a> to take a step towards the Net Zero goal. \u2026 \u2018This kind of infrastructure is critical for the overall system of renewable energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1746092531_449_0_Medlock-Valley-Fishing-Club.jpg\" alt=\"Medlock Valley fishing pond \" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Medlock Valley fishing pond (Image: Craig Steadman)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Usually, development is only allowed on greenbelt land under a set of special circumstances &#8211; which the application did not meet. But council officers still recommended the proposal for approval under a set of \u2018very special circumstances\u2019, stating the overall environmental benefits outweighed the value of \u2018low quality greenbelt\u2019, which was formerly the site of a dye factory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">But Craig Steadman, who has been leasing Medlock Valley from the council for 26 years and running it as a community fishing club, told the committee: \u201cThis isn\u2019t about opposing green technology. It\u2019s about protecting green space. The two should not be in conflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThis green belt space is not abstract. It\u2019s where families walk, where wildlife thrives and where our towns end. (Image: Planning documents courtesy of Oldham Council)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The fishing club also provides a safe haven for \u2018people with mental or physical health conditions\u2019, he later told the LDRS. \u201cIt\u2019s a positive, really peaceful space. People can come and have a chat with others if they feel lonely, or enjoy the quiet. It\u2019s a real little community.
