{"id":653915,"date":"2025-12-25T10:37:28","date_gmt":"2025-12-25T10:37:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/653915\/"},"modified":"2025-12-25T10:37:28","modified_gmt":"2025-12-25T10:37:28","slug":"inside-plans-to-make-london-the-uks-first-swimmable-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/653915\/","title":{"rendered":"Inside plans to make London the UK&#8217;s first &#8216;swimmable city&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tSadiq Khan has annouced plans to create new wild swim spots across London, following in the footsteps of cities such as Paris and New York\t\t\t\t\t                <\/p>\n<p>A floating pool in the Thames and a beach in Hackney are just some of the ideas being discussed under plans to make London a <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/opinion\/need-more-wild-swimming-spots-golf-courses-3239958?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cswimmable city\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cities across the world, including Paris, New York and Melbourne, are spending millions cleaning up their rivers to make them accessible for <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/inews-lifestyle\/wellbeing\/wild-swimming-why-cold-water-makes-us-feel-better-930137?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swimming<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has joined them by signing a commitment to make the UK capital\u2019s rivers \u201cswimmable\u201d within the next decade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have 41 rivers and waterways across the city, all of which are badly polluted and it\u2019s an absolute scandal that we\u2019ve just normalised it and accepted it to be that way,\u201d London Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy, Mete Coban, told The i Paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSewage, shipping and safety\u201d are the three main challenges the mayor\u2019s office will have to overcome, according to Chris Romer-Lee, the London-based founder of Swimmable Cities, an alliance of urban areas working towards cleaning up their waterways.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"507\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/SEI_278370135.jpg\" alt=\"People gathering in the river Thames in South Bank in London, United Kingdom. The Thames may not be the first place that springs to mind when you fancy a swim, but with Londons most famous waterway now cleaner than its been for 150 years, wild swimming is on the up.\" class=\"wp-image-4119786\"  \/>\u2018Sewage, shipping and safety\u2019 are the challenges Sadiq Khan will have to overcome to make parts of the Thames swimmable (Photo: lorenzo grifantini\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Untreated sewage was released by <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/thames-water-increase-pollution-incidents-3422968?ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thames Water<\/a> into London\u2019s rivers for over 12,000 hours in the year up until March 2024, a City Hall analysis has found.<\/p>\n<p>The Thames is also by far the busiest waterway in the country, handling over half of the UK\u2019s inland freight per year.<\/p>\n<p>How to make London swimmable<\/p>\n<p>There are currently eight spots across London, including Hampstead Ponds and Canary Wharf, where safe open water swimming is possible, according to a map published by City Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next three years, the mayor\u2019s office will select a number of new sites to direct investment towards to ensure there is access to wild swimming in all corners of the city, Coban said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"538\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/SEI_278783628.jpg\" alt=\"Map of open water swimming sites in London Image: https:\/\/www.london.gov.uk\/media\/106720\/download\" class=\"wp-image-4130121\"  \/>The existing and suggested open swim spots in London (Photo: Greater London Authority)<\/p>\n<p>City Hall has suggested four sites where this could be, including two spots on the River Thames at Teddington and Albany Reach. The two other sites are Hackney Marshes on the River Lea and the River Roding, both in east London.<\/p>\n<p>Community groups are also being asked to come forward with ideas for sites in the city that could be turned into safe outdoor swim spots.<\/p>\n<p>A report by the London Assembly published earlier this year suggested the mayor should set a target of creating 10 new wild swimming spots across London over the next decade.<\/p>\n<p>The Thames has recently undergone a clean-up thanks to the Thames Tideway <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/thames-super-sewer-stretching-16-miles-opens-london-3322092?ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">super sewer<\/a> that has captured over 12 million tonnes of sewage, or 400 Olympic-sized swimming pools \u2013 that would otherwise have been dumped into the river since it opened last year.<\/p>\n<p>But the Thames is still <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/heavy-rain-sparks-sewage-discharges-across-london-pollution-incidents-up-60-3815488?ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">heavily polluted<\/a> with sewage and chemicals, which flow into the river from over 50 tributaries.<\/p>\n<p>Romer-Lee said the entire Thames does not need to be cleaned up to create safe swimming spots, pointing to the example of Paris, where seasonal bathing areas have been created on the Seine that are tested regularly for pollution.<\/p>\n<p>The Seine is also home to a floating swimming pool, Piscine Jos\u00e9phine Baker, that sits on a boat in the city\u2019s 13th arrondissement.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, New York is in the process of building a pool that filters river water in Manhattan\u2019s East River.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to see us swimming in the Thames or on the Thames. I don\u2019t think we are ever going to swim in the central London section of the Thames, it is just too dangerous\u2026.but if you put a floating boat in the Thames, which you swim in, such as Paris has, then you overcome that problem,\u201d Romer-Lee said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"qa\"><p>\nHow cities across the world are becoming \u2018swimmable\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Paris<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the 2024 Olympics, authorities in Paris spent \u20ac1.4bn (\u00a31.2bn) cleaning up the River Seine so it could be used for events including the triathlon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The investment included major upgrades to the city\u2019s sewerage network, including treatment plant upgrades and a giant rainwater storage basin to reduce the amount of sewage spilling into the river.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"570\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/SEI_278370138.jpg\" alt=\"Paris, France - August 4, 2024 : People swimming at the open Bassin des Recollets in the Canal Saint-Martin on the Right Bank on a sunny summer day in Paris, France\" class=\"wp-image-4119791\"  \/>People swimming at the open Bassin des Recollets in the Canal Saint-Martin on the Right Bank in Paris, France (Photo: MDoculus\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>The investment has not reduced sewage pollution; the men\u2019s triathlon had to be postponed due to heavy rain, which resulted in high levels of E.coli in the river during the Olympics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, the situation has significantly improved, and this summer, three official bathing sites were opened along the Seine. These sites are only open in the summer months and are tested daily, with swimming only allowed on days when the water meets EU regulations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rotterdam<\/p>\n<p>A floating park and swim zone opened on <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/inews-lifestyle\/travel\/rotterdam-dutch-city-tourists-new-attraction-3154583?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rotterdam\u2019s Rijnhaven<\/a>, a former shipping port in the heart of the city, in the summer of 2024. It\u2019s open in the summer months and monitored for water quality.<\/p>\n<p>The swim zone is the first stage of a wider plan to build a permanent beach and larger swimming area in Rotterdam.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s first inner-city wave pool has also opened on the Steigersgracht, one of the river Rotte\u2019s medieval canals.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"572\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/SEI_278372933.jpg\" alt=\"Locals enjoy an early evening at Zwembad Rijnhaven in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on September 7, 2025. (Photo by Michael Nguyen\/NurPhoto via Getty Images)\" class=\"wp-image-4120062\"  \/>Locals enjoy an early evening at Zwembad Rijnhaven in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on September 7 (Photo: Michael Nguyen\/NurPhoto\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>New York\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In October this year, authorities in New York adopted new water quality standards as part of an effort to make the city\u2019s rivers safe for swimming.<br \/>It follows a significant clean-up effort that has seen sewage spills decrease by 85 per cent since the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>A new initiative +Pool is currently being constructed in the city\u2019s East River that will filter river water to make it safe for swimming.<\/p>\n<p>A smaller test pool is currently in the water, with hopes to install the final 2,000 sq. ft. rectangular version of the pool in May 2026. More testing will take place before it opens to the public.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"718\" height=\"535\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/SEI_278372596.jpg\" alt=\"concept of +Pool river swim facility planned for New York Image: https:\/\/pluspool.com\/press-kit\/\" class=\"wp-image-4120059\"  \/>Concept of +Pool river swim facility planned for New York (Photo:: +Pool)\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But cleaning up the Thames remains a massively expensive task that will require pulling levers that are outside of the mayor\u2019s control.<\/p>\n<p>Thames Water plans to invest \u00a31.8bn to clean up London\u2019s rivers over the next five years as part of a wider industry effort, funded by hikes in water bills, to get a grip on the sewage crisis plaguing Britain\u2019s waterways.<\/p>\n<p>On top of this, City Hall and Transport for London have announced \u00a37.15m in funding to reduce the impact of road run-off on rivers, while the mayor also has a \u00a312m Green Roots Fund for new green and blue spaces.<\/p>\n<p>Together, this amount is more than the reported \u20ac1.4bn (\u00a31.2bn) spent by authorities in Paris to clean up the Seine ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, but this clean-up was far from perfect, as evidenced when the men\u2019s triathlon was postponed due to high E.coli levels in the river.<\/p>\n<p>Coban acknowledges the mayor has limited powers to clean up London\u2019s rivers, but believes Khan has the ability to push for significant changes, equating it to Khan\u2019s mission to improve London\u2019s air quality.<\/p>\n<p>Annual concentrations of roadside nitrogen dioxide almost halved in London between 2016 and 2023 and met UK legal limits for the first time last year, with City Hall policies, including the <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/opinion\/lets-make-ulez-work-to-prevent-children-becoming-victims-of-air-pollution-like-my-daughter-2513668?ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ultra Low Emission Zone<\/a>, given significant credit.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s currently unclear what policies the mayor could introduce to recreate this success with London\u2019s waterways, beyond the investments from Thames Water that have been mandated at a national level. A policy paper will be published in the new year, according to Coban.<\/p>\n<p>To Coban, the mayor\u2019s new mission is as much as a social one as it is environmental.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t swim.
