{"id":655459,"date":"2025-12-26T07:37:13","date_gmt":"2025-12-26T07:37:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/655459\/"},"modified":"2025-12-26T07:37:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-26T07:37:13","slug":"staying-at-home-could-leave-you-exposed-to-indoor-air-pollution-study-reveals-environment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/655459\/","title":{"rendered":"Staying at home could leave you exposed to indoor air pollution, study reveals | Environment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Christmas and New Year is a time when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2022\/dec\/18\/im-hosting-my-first-christmas-does-that-make-me-an-adult\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">many people<\/a> will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2017\/dec\/23\/mum-suggested-under-ironing-board-where-are-you-sleeping-this-christmas\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">be at home<\/a>. Being indoors can give us a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/full\/10.1021\/acs.est.6b01817\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">degree of protection from outdoor air pollution<\/a>, but it can also trap pollution we produce inside our homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Risks from secondhand tobacco smoke are well known and the effect is perhaps best seen by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cochranelibrary.com\/cdsr\/doi\/10.1002\/14651858.CD005992.pub3\/full\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comparison of health data<\/a> before and after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/352\/bmj.i701\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indoor smoking bans<\/a>. A study of 47 indoor smoking bans in public spaces found hospital admissions for heart attacks <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s40572-014-0020-1\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decreased by an average of 12%<\/a>, but people are less aware of other indoor pollutants and how to minimise them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Dr James Heydon and a team from the University of Nottingham <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2073-4433\/11\/12\/1326\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">measured<\/a> air pollution <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/dec\/18\/wood-burners-triple-harmful-indoor-air-pollution-study-finds\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in 20 UK homes for four weeks<\/a>. Each had a <a href=\"https:\/\/uk-air.defra.gov.uk\/assets\/documents\/reports\/cat07\/1901291328_Smoke_Control_Web.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Defra \u201capproved\u201d wood stove, exempted for use in smoke control areas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe found that wood burning can trigger sharp spikes in indoor air pollution,\u201d he said. \u201cThe biggest increases were associated with routine stove management like lighting the stove, opening the door to refuel, and tending the fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Teams from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/school-public-health\/environmental-research-group\/research\/measurement\/london-wood-burning-project-air-quality-data-collection\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Imperial College London<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41598-025-05886-1\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Surrey<\/a> found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/school-public-health\/environmental-research-group\/research\/measurement\/london-wood-burning-project-air-quality-data-collection\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">similar results<\/a> in their studies of homes in south-east England and in Cornwall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Heydon said: \u201cTo try to reduce their indoor pollution, refuel less often, open the stove door as slowly and briefly as possible, and avoid frequent top-ups. Other research has also highlighted the role of ventilation. Users could also consider not lighting their fires when children, or people with health conditions, are in the same room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Wood and coal-burning can also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/school-public-health\/environmental-research-group\/research\/measurement\/london-wood-burning-project-air-quality-data-collection\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affect neighbours<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Using freedom of information <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mumsforlungs.org\/news\/the-big-choke-wood-burning-complaints-rise\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">requests<\/a>, the campaign group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mumsforlungs.org\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mums for Lungs<\/a> found about 15,000 complaints are being made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/oct\/22\/only-one-prosecution-wood-burning-complaints-year-england\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">annually to local councils<\/a> about smoke from neighbours\u2019 fires.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Heydon said: \u201cRecognising that wood-burning stoves are not harmless appliances is the first step in reducing exposure. Simple choices, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2024\/sep\/20\/knowing-polluting-impact-of-home-fires-could-modify-behaviour-study-finds\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">like not lighting a stove on poor air quality or low wind days<\/a>, improving ventilation, and avoiding frequent refuelling can help make a real difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/mar\/07\/how-cooking-with-gas-releases-harmful-air-pollution-in-the-home\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cooking also adds<\/a> to indoor air pollution. Prof Sarah West from the University of York is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.york.ac.uk\/yesi\/research\/environment-health\/ingenious\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ingenious study<\/a> that measured air pollution in 310 homes in Bradford. \u201cIn our Bradford homes the highest particle pollution was related to cooking,\u201d she said. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlelanding\/2025\/em\/d4em00634h\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frying was a particularly big source<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">West\u2019s message is simple: \u201cWe were talking about solutions in a research meeting. I came up with \u2018pan on, fan on\u2019 and it stuck. We had magnets made up to stick to cooker hoods, so that people would see it, and when they put their pan on to cook, they would also turn their fan on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The research team also recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/player.sheffield.ac.uk\/events\/fresh-air-good-health-how-reduce-air-pollution-your-home\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">turning on the extractor or opening windows<\/a> when using cleaning products and scented sprays around the house.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Christmas and New Year is a time when many people will be at home.
