Featuring 38\u00a0watercolours\u00a0by renowned artist Joseph\u00a0Mallord\u00a0William Turner, the highly\u00a0anticipated\u00a0free annual display will take pride of place in room 21 in National Galleries Scotland: National in Edinburgh from 1 \u2013 31 January 2026.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Last year saw thousands of visitors flocking to the National Galleries of Scotland to marvel at a once in a lifetime exchange of Turner\u00a0watercolours\u00a0from the Henry Vaughan Bequest with the National Gallery of Ireland,\u00a0honouring\u00a0the 250th anniversary of the artist\u2019s birth. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">January 2026 will mark the triumphant return of Scotland\u2019s Turners to Edinburgh, giving avid fans and newfound admirers the chance to spend time with some of the most treasured works from the Scottish national collection.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nen.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Joseph-Mallord-William-Turner-Durham-about-1835.-Henry-Vaughan-Bequest-1900.-National-Galleries-of-Scotland-.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"664\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Joseph-Mallord-William-Turner-Durham-about-1835.-Henry-Vaughan-Bequest-1900.-National-Galleries-of-S.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-220190\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Turner in January<\/strong>\u00a0is a beloved tradition for many people in Scotland. It signals the dawning of the New Year, and as we leave behind the darkest days of winter, the bright vitality of Turner\u2019s work is exactly what we need.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Scotland\u2019s famous collection of Turner\u00a0watercolours\u00a0was left to the nation by the great art collector Henry Vaughan in 1900. Following Vaughan\u2019s strict guidelines, they have only ever been displayed during\u00a0the month of January, when natural light levels are at their lowest. Because of this, these\u00a0watercolours\u00a0still\u00a0possess\u00a0a freshness and an intensity of\u00a0colour\u00a0almost 200 years since they were originally created.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">This\u00a0mesmerising\u00a0exhibition\u00a0demonstrates\u00a0the extraordinary range of Turner\u2019s work in\u00a0watercolour, including atmospheric early drawings, experimental\u00a0colour\u00a0studies, spellbinding studies for prints and book illustrations and exhibition showstoppers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nen.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Joseph-Mallord-William-Turner-Chatel-Argent-in-the-Val-dAosta-near-Villeneuve-after-1836.-Henry-Vaughan-Bequest-1900.-National-Galleries-of-Scotland-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"2011\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Joseph-Mallord-William-Turner-Chatel-Argent-in-the-Val-dAosta-near-Villeneuve-after-1836.-Henry-Vaug.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-220191\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Born in London in 1775, Turner\u2019s combination of exceptional talent, intellectual curiosity and relentless hard work resulted in watercolours which capture the sublime beauty of nature and encourage us to look again at the world around us.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In a career spanning 50 years, he\u00a0developed new ways of painting in watercolour and revolutionised ideas of what could be achieved in the medium.\u00a0Experimenting with an array of techniques and\u00a0colour, Turner created works which continue to captivate and excite audiences today.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nen.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Photo-by-Stewart-Attwood-3-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Photo-by-Stewart-Attwood-3-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-220192\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Turner in January<\/strong>\u00a0invites visitors on an exciting,\u00a0colourful\u00a0journey, leaving behind January blues in favor of Turner\u2019s views of the world, via moody landscapes, impressive city\u00a0views\u00a0and dramatic seascapes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Travel across Britain, Europe and beyond through a dazzling array of artwork including scenes of the Himalayas,\u00a0Venice\u00a0and the Swiss Alps, to places a little closer to home, from a tempestuous view of Loch\u00a0Coruisk\u00a0on the Isle of Skye all the way down to serene Melrose in the Scottish Borders.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">This year\u00a0<strong>Turner in January<\/strong>\u00a0will also feature the picturesque\u00a0watercolour\u00a0Virginia Water\u00a0(about 1829),\u00a0on long term loan to the National Galleries of Scotland and displayed for the first time since 2020. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The work shows a royal fishing expedition on Virginia Water, the artificial lake created as a royal pleasure ground in Windsor Great Park, with King George IV\u2019s newly built \u2018Chinese\u2019 Fishing Temple in the background. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In the foreground a pair of royal swans\u00a0seem to be\u00a0chasing away\u00a0mallard ducks, a visual pun on Turner\u2019s middle name.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Visitors will be able to immerse themselves further into the world of Turner through a\u00a0Smartify\u00a0audio highlights guide, returning for 2026. Free to use on mobile devices, this audio guided tour will give fresh insights into the artwork on display, expanding Turner\u2019s ideas and inspirations and adding another layer to the<strong>\u00a0Turner in January<\/strong>\u00a0experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Summer 2026 will also\u00a0offer an\u00a0additional\u00a0opportunity to enjoy Turner\u2019s work at the National Galleries of Scotland.
