It also never quite felt finished.

The Pixel Watch 4 is the first version that suggests Google has finally decided what it wants its smartwatch to be.

The change is most obvious in the screen.

The glass now curves through the display itself rather than sitting on top of it, giving the watch a softer edge and a clearer sense of depth. That seemingly small adjustment changes how the watch reads on the wrist. It’s less of a gadget now, and more a desirable object.

Pixel Watch 4 (45 mm)

£329.00 at amazon.co.uk

That clarity carries into the rest of the design. The case proportions make more sense, the interface less busy, and the whole experience is more intuitive. The watch comes in two sizes, 41 mm and 45 mm, a big difference when it comes to comfort.

Colour options are tastefully restrained – black, silver, soft gold and pale pastels – with interchangeable straps doing the work when it comes to personalisation.

Google.

In use, the Pixel Watch 4 does what most people expect a smartwatch to do, but with a slightly different emphasis.

It tracks activity across more than 40 exercise modes, monitors sleep, heart rate and stress and presents that data through Fitbit’s readiness and cardio-load metrics, which are designed to balance effort and recovery rather than chase constant optimisation.

You can dictate messages, check calendars, control music, pay for things, navigate on foot or by bike, and, on LTE models, leave your phone behind altogether.

There are also safety features that go further than most rivals, including loss-of-pulse detection and emergency satellite messaging when you are out of range.

Technical improvements, too, are incremental but meaningful.

The screen is now brighter outdoors, performance is noticeably smoother, and battery life lasts long enough to make it through the day. (Charging is also quicker.)

Google.

Compared with the Apple Watch, Google’s approach feels less about closing rings and more about managing the background admin of the day.

There are still compromises. Fitness tracking is serviceable rather than distinctive, and navigation feels like it could still do with some work – especially for a company partly defined by its maps.

The best smartwatch out there? Maybe not. But it’s without question the best watch Google has made.

Prices range from £399 to £449; store.google.com

You Might Also Like

For several years, Google’s Pixel Watch has been an appealing, if slightly awkward object.
